You won't need jammies, makeup, jewelry, etc.
I enjoyed my lip balm, flip flops, hand lotion, and cell phone (which I wore around my neck for security purposes).
Hope this helps!

My bag contained clothes to go home in of course, fresh undies and socks especially, books to read (of which I didn't), a journal to write in, the cell phone and most importantly the portable mp3/CD player with headphones. After surgery they will have you up and walking and sometimes you will be doing it alone, the music kept me going. My goal would be to listen to three songs or more each time I went walking around the halls. The hospital provided all the toiletries that I needed (soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc).

You may want to pack soap and stuff. I did. I'm not sure if the hospital would have provided them or not, but I am kinda particular about my soaps etc. I brought one of my own pillows (actually my husband's pillow). Chapstick is a good one too because you won't be able to take anything by mouth for the first couple of days. I also brought books and a couple of magazines. Leave the books at home but a good fluff magazine is good cuse you can just flip through it easily. The only other things that I was REALLY happy to have were my own slippers and my own underwear. Just something that makes you feel more human in your own stuff.

Not much!
Chapstick, loose clothes for the trip home, your own pillow (for the trip home). I liked having my own brush and soap. I was too unfocused to read though and didn't have much interest in the TV. Also I used moiturizer and my own toothbrush and toothpaste. That is it though.

Yes, the MP3 player is very helpful to drown out the noises of the hospital. If you want to sleep but your neighbors have noisy visitors, just put on something mellow and drift away. Chapstick, your own slippers & robe & toiletries, clean (loose) clothes for the ride home and your own pillow. I was completely content with these items. Good luck to you. Post when you can to let us know how you're doing.

everyone is right, you really dont need much. i really like the mp3 idea. i wish i thought of that. at night it got noisey at times esp. when the cna were changing the trash can in everyones rooms and filling up water pitchers. i know i could of shut the door, but i didnt like that closed in feeling the first night the second night went by better. and having your own undies was wonderful after the catheter came out. bring your bigger size one though, you will be swollen and the bigger ones just fit better. for me the pressure of anything around my abdomen was annoying at times. i hope this helps. and good look with the surgery!!!!! regi

Undies for sure. They provide the gown for you, but I hate that free-floating feeling you have with no undies on. Plus, to me it's kinda creepy to have visitors while I'm lying there al fresco. Don't forget your cell charger...Good luck!

Things to take to the hospital
Hi Desmccoy,
Chapstick, pillow, toiletries/body lotion, robe, underwear, pads/tampons (for you have a cycle, surgery will start your cycles), loose outfit to go home and if having an open RNY a heating pad.
