Just a note - getting a referral to see the surgeon and getting approval for the surgery are two completely different things!

This is how it went for me:

When they preped me that morning, the first thing they did was start an IV and push a few meds to relax me. The anesthesiologist came by and introduced himself, and told me what would be happening.

When they rolled me into the operating room, and transferred me to the table, I was very relaxed. The anesthesiologist placed a mask over my nose and mouth, told me to breath regularly and that's that last thing I remember. When I woke up, I felt like I had a stomach ache and my wife and son were sitting there smiling at me. I simply felt I had been in a deep sleep, that's all.

The pain, it depends on the person and how they tolerate it. I had little to no pain, didn't even need the pain pump. I was up and walking later that afternoon, and bouncing around on the bed the next day.

Yeah, your going to be tired, simply because of the anesthesia. When I got home from the hospital (3 days later), I took a shower, and slept for a few hours. (Now, here, again, I'm very different). The next day, I got up, dressed and went shopping with my family.

I was off work for a total of 2 weeks, and yes, I did sleep a lot. The anesthesia can really hang with you - but it will finally wear off.

As for vomiting, sorry, but that's one thing I can guarantee you will do at some point. I can't tell you when or anything because it's different with each person. Your best bet is to simply follow the rules your surgeon gives.

Hope this helps!

I understand how you feel. For me the throwing up hasn't been a big deal. When its happened it is more like overfilling a cup and the water running over. I don't really heave and it doesn't hurt.
Going under is no biggie. They put meds in your IV and you fall asleep pretty fast. It's really easy and you don't even realize what's happening.
My belly doesn't feel funny (I'm a month out). I can feel the food going down sometimes but it doesn't feel bad or hurt.

It'll be ok, really it will. You've come to the right place for support.

thanks both of you =)

i know that getting approval is different...but i was honestly more worried about the refferal because... my doctor is kind of against all types of surgery for weight loss...i knew it was going to be a battle with my doctor.
im sure insurance wise its going to be difficult. but im ready for that. =)

i dunno i have so much about this running through my mind...i have so many questions which will soon be answered im sure...

do all people need to take a sleep apnea test? i've never had signs of it...
i'm nervous about the psych test... like im not crazy i dont have any addictions... i enjoy drinking occassionally with my friends. but not often.
but i've never talked to a psychiatrist or anything like that...im sure they try and pick your brain...and i probably should talk to one because of the stress i feel and i always hold the feelings in til i cant take it anymore...but i dunno i just havent and that scares me...=/

I think everyone else has answered most of your questions, and I agree with all of them. As for seeing the psychiatrist, don't worry about it. I had to answer a bunch of questions on a computer first, and then when I talked to the psychiatrist, she just went over with me what my answers revealed. I was rather surprised at how so much came out of the easy questions...and thinking about it, it all was quite accurate. They don't really pick your brain, just visit with you. My Dr. was very nice...easy to talk with...and it is not something you need to worry about.
If there is any kind of an informational meeting at the hospital that you will be going to, I advise you to attend one. You learn a great deal at those meetings. At our hospital a doctor gives out the information, and then asks for questions. I think it is very assuring to go to one of these.
If there is not informational meeting, perhaps there is already a support group in your area for weight loss surgery patients, and most of those welcome people like yourself so you can see and hear from others with experience. Another good sourse of information. And of course, web sites offer lots of information...so use that. If you research, it helps calm the nerves and makes you more informed and able to make the decisions you will need to make.
You will be fine....and in the end, it will be worth it...just ask me, I am very happy and feeling great !!

You surgeon may require a bunch of things to make sure you are 100% ready for the surgery... Things could happen fast as your insurance does not require a 3 or 6 month program... but then again, your surgeon might. I know my "team" (surgeon, nutritionist, etc) have expectations... and I don't think anyone gets a surgical date in less than 3 months.

Be prepared and keep reading as much as you can get your hands on! The more you know, the better off you'll be.

Bear in mind - they are all there for exactly the same reason as you - no reason to be nervous!

I hate going under. But... let me tell you a funny story. In April I had to hve my hernia repaired before they put me out the doctor asked about my girls thats the last thing I remember. I woke in recovery all in a panic because I wasn't sure about children. My husband reminded me that they were fine and that all was well. So, everyone is different.
