When they originally did my surgery there was no tube down my throat when I woke up. However, 24 hours later when I developed a complication and had to go back into surgery, I woke up in recovery with a tube down my throat. Not gonna sugar coat it - it was NOT a plesant experience. I did start to panic a bit at first and try to pull it out (I think that's a natural response b/c after the nurse calmed me down and got me relaxed, I could see and hear the other people in recover with tubes going down their throats doing the same thing and hearing the nurses give them the same speeches). Once I relaxed it was fine. Maybe it will be different for you since you know ahead of time that it is a possibility.

Yes, it will be uncomfortable. Yes you will want to pull it out. The nurse can give you meds to help you calm down when you wake up. (I know I wanted MINE OUT!)
Once you are "out of the woods" they will put it. They just want to make sure you can keep your airway open before it comes out. You don't want them to have to put another one in.

Don't worry about this!!!!! This is a minor thing and if you have a positive attitude, it will seem like NOTHING! Don't let this one thing freak you out. You will be happy your doc is taking precautions he needs to. Probably after it's over, you will be on so much pain meds right after surgery that you won't even hardly remember what it was like. You will just remember it happened. So RELAX GIRLS! Don't obssess. Just say you are doing this and that is ALL THERE IS TO IT! You will be fine!

Most often people are too drugged up from surgery to remember any of the tube business. Like Van, I barely remember my private room that first night! I know I was tubed, but couldn't tell ya a thing about it. I really wouldn't worry, and if necessary just tell your anesthesia person that your a bit concerned about that part and maybe they will drop a bit of versaid (sp?) or something into your IV after the surgery...(it's a short term memory blocker, works like a charm!!)

Everyone gets "tubed". And I believe everyone wakes up with it in.. we just dont remember it... I think we have to be awake before they can take it out. I remember them telling me they were taking it.. but I dont remember them taking it. Had a sore throat for a few days... BUT>. I have a new baby pouch.. I'd have lived through keeping the tube in the entire time in the hospital if it meant that At the end of this journey My health will be so much better... whats a short period of discomfort or not liking something .. compared to a longer life.. with less complications...

Pros and cons ... its gonna suck... but.. at least you'll live longer
