Default New Driving Laws 7/1/07

Very important new changes going in to effect 7/1/2007. (For the CA peeps)

New Driving Fines for 2007

1. Carpool lane - 1st time $1068.50 starting 7/1/07 (The $271 posted
on the highway is old). Don't do it again because 2nd time is going to be
double. 3rd time triple, and 4th time license suspended.

2. Incorrect lane change - $380. Don't cross the lane on solid lines or intersections.

3. Block intersection - $485

4. Driving on the shoulder - $450

5. Cell phone use in the construction zone. - Double fine as of 07/01/07.
Cell phone use must be "hands free" while driving. (see below. This can be at least $570.00. Remember all traffic fines are DOUBLED in construction zone. So a $150 speeding ticket + a $285.00 cell phone COULD be like $870.00.)

6. Passengers over 18 not in their seatbelts - both passengers and drivers get tickets .

7. Speeders can only drive 3 miles above the limit.

8. DUI = JAIL (Stays on your driving record for 10 years!)

9.
As of 07/01/07 cell phone use must be "hands free" while driving.
Ticket is $285. They will be looking for this like crazy - easy money for police department.

Not to knock it or anything, but is there a link to this somewhere? You'd think for driving laws going into effect next week (on a Sunday no less), there would be a little more media coverage.

This one was forwarded from an ins co. Who knows maybe its not true.

There is some debate on the cell phone law as the DMV is stating 7/1/2008. However, additional resources state 7/1/2011. This is commonplace in CA, they will implement a new law, make an example out of a few, have a media frenzy and then the grace period is over.

Edit, double post.

Gotta love Snopes. I only go with what I am forwarded by the companies I represent. Gotta Love it. The cool part, was forwarded to me via my best friend @ GEICO which was forwarded to her via the VP of Underwriting. That makes my laugh cause I couldnt stand that VP when I worked there!

The snopes:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/traffic/california.asp

However, some of the fine amounts are inaccurate for San Diego County. The second HoV violation is doubled. My husband has received 2 of these violations.

The DUI 10 years is TRUE:

You lose the state mandated "California Good Driver Diiscount" for a period of 10 yrs. Which basically means if you are not a "CA good driver" then an ins co can reject you for whatever reason.

If you are a CA Good driver then the ins co cannot reject you, and they have to offer the absolute best rates that they have on file with the state.

This was voted in to law in 1989 and finally fully implemented. (See California Proposition 103) Go Go CA legislation!!

The seatbelt is TRUE. With the exception of the fact that the passenger may be ticketed if they are 16 or older.

Doing some additional research cause I felt like a tool getting trixd by Snopes.

Evidently some of these amounts are proposed fines and are currently pending with the state. Each individual county has the right to impose their own fine for each violation and the state only gives "guidelines."

As far as the cell phone law that was supposed to go in to effect 7/1 it has been extended to 7/1/2008 due an injunction filed due to the current CA vehicle code which basically contradicts itself as utilizing any head set, head phone or auido device other than a physician prescribed hearing aide is prohibited under the CA veh code.

Interesting.
