Hi, I am currently scheduled for the roux-en-Y gastric bypass on Sept. 9th. I hear all the stories about pain. I'm wondering if they give you anything for pain once you leave the hospital? Someone said to wear sweats in the hospital when walking around. Don't they interfer with drains? I have yet to go to a support group and hope I can find the support here. Thanks!

My goodness you are not far away from the date!
First off, welcome to thinner times
Secondly, you will find lots of support from those who have gone before us, those that are scheduled for surgery along with you, and those of us who are still going through those hoops to get where you are today--scheduled for surgery!
Best wishes, and again...Welcome!

newbie meets doctor
I met my doctor on a one-to-one today! He was wonderful! Good sense of humor, compassion, expertise, and willing to let me talk on and on! Now I am anxious....I know....the week of hell is coming....the dumping.....the trying to figure out what you need to eat and how....BUT..No longer will I have to wonder if I will fit into the booth, the airplane seat strap.....I'll think of this and try to accept what will happen. Wish me luck!

Liz, it just isn't that hard. What you do is follow the directions given to you, to the letter. You will not dump if you do that. There will be moments when you don't feel great, and you will feel tired for a while, but don't anticipate the worst...turn that energy into excitement for the future, and assume the best.
As for pain, you will get the pain meds you need, but you may not even need any, or maybe a Tylenol. Everyone is different. You won't be set adrift with no resources. Your doctor knows what you have to do, and will have those directions for you.
You go, girl!

I am 2 weeks out tomorrow, my surgery was done laproscopably and I have had very minimal pain. I guess I am one of the lucky ones. I have had some pain but nothing compared to the pain I had during my ACL reconstruction(knee surgery) 3 years ago.
They gave me a morphine pump while in the hospital (I did not hit the button as often as I thought I would). I was then sent home with liquid Hydrocodone. I really have not needed the meds during the day, but at night it helps me get comfortable so I can sleep.
As for the dumping I have kept tot the diet very stickly and have not experienced that or the vomiting yet. I am sure when I start eating regular food that may start.
I can only hope that your surgery goes as well as mine has so far. GOOD LUCK!!!

This is very good to hear, Texashotchick. It is my plan to follow doctor's orders to the letter, too!

Hello and welcome to the forum!
They sent me home with a RX for a bottle of pain stuff, I did get it filled, but didn't really need it.
Everyone is different.

They will send you home with pain medication. The pain is worse for some people than for others for some reason, but it should be tolerable. If it's really bad, then you just call the doctor and ask for a different pain medication. The worse thing for most people is actually the gas, not the pain from their incisions. For that, the best thing is to walk a lot. It helps the gas get moving.
I did not wear sweats while in the hospital. I wore one hospital gown the "right way," opening in the back, and a second hospital gown "backwards," opening in the front, like a robe. It just seemed easier. However, I wore sweats home form the hosital.
I did not have any drains. Not all docs use them. You can ask your doc if he or she does.
Kelly

OK the GAS did suck. That is where I had more pain than in my stomach.
I learned afterwards that when they perform the surgery they fill the abdomen with air. They remove as much of the air as possible the but the air left in the body rises in your body and causes some discomfort or pain. Mine went straight to my left shoulder. But getting up and walking around definately reduces the pain.
GOOD LUCK and after surgery remember to
SIP water constantly
REST but also WALK you will feel better
