Default Commericals for Revisions.....

I thought it was quite interesting to watch as the commercial business of WLS and the popularity of RNY and Lap-Band show up in advertisement all over the place over the years. I was watching TV last night, and a local hospital that is well known for it's RNY program years ago is advertising for revisions......is this a sign of the decreasing effectiveness of RNY surgery, the uncovering of inexperienced surgeons, or that we need to educate more on the surgery is NOT a magic cure...just a tool that also is bypassable if you don't learn to use it??????

She means revisions, Kelly. I've seen the same hospital's commercials.

They probably are advertising to the people who had older surgeries. I know of a few people who already need the lap band replaced, and would do better to have a newer procedure done- like Lap RNY.

Default I had lap band 10 yrs ago, now having to have a revision

Hi,

I had a successful lap band 10 years ago. I went from 275 to 160 and now back up to 180. I have kept the weight off, gained over the last six months as I started getting sick a lot and went to soft foods and liguids, mainly ice cream, because it was what I could keep down. Seems my band is pinching my stomach off so much that the opening where the food enters is almost closed completely. The Dr's say it is common with my type of surgery, which they are referring to as VGB.

Anyway, I now have to have a revision, to either a sleeve, or gastric bypass. I was very upset about this at first, but now after talking to the surgeon, who has had a sleeve himself, I feel much better. Depending on what happens when they go in, will depend on whether I get the sleeve, which is what I want, or have to go to bypass. He says I will probably lose another 50 pounds, but I don't need to lose that much, I will be too skinny, maybe 25-30 is all. My surgery date is set for August 31st. They say it is risky, but I have no choice. They also tell me that I am in the 10% range of people that have bands that they actually worked on, I guess I was one of the lucky ones.

I hope I am one of the lucky ones with revisions as well.

I just had a revision from a lapband to RNY. I had my band for 4 yrs before I started having issues. Everytime I go to my surgeon's office I meet 2 or 3 people there with complications and having to have theirs removed too. It seems like the 3 or 4 year mark gets alot of ppl with the band.

I, too, was banded in 2006, was successful in the beginning but then nothing. Mary, I'm having revision to RNY on Aug. 31st too! Good luck with yours. Are you nervous? I am. We'll have to compare notes.

Monique, do you mind me asking when you had your revision? I'd love to hear your experience since my revision is in 12 days.

Sometimes this "tool" can have ramifications. The articles below explain what I didn't know when I had my initial gastric bypass surgery.

Weight Loss Surgery release form
Arch Neurol -- The Neurological Complications of Bariatric Surgery, August 2004, Berger 61 (8): 1185

wishing you one of the best things in life, health
