Band to Bypass...Kind of Freaking Out
So I was banded in March of 2008 and I havent lost a thing, so I have decided to have a revision to bypass. I trust my surgeon more then any other person in this world ( Dr. Kurian @ NYU) and my surgery is scheduled For June 2nd. Even though this is my 2nd trip on the merry go round im really scared this time, band to bypass is really risky and you're a greater risk for complications. Thank God and mother for good genes I dont have any medical conditions ( Hypertension, Diabetes , Sleep Apnea , Etc. Etc) so that does help. I guess im just afraid of this surgery and the nutritional deficiencies. Just looking for anyone who has been in a similar situation or if not to just offer some encouraging words...

It's a scarey process...re-plumbing your stomach...learn everything you can (the pros and cons) and what to expect, but expect the unexpected!
Okay, basically what I'm trying to say is...this journey is a wild ride but one I would stand in line for again in a heartbeat!

I love my RNY tool. Why is it you didnt succeed with the lapband? I know that diet is a big part of making the lapband successful. I would worry if that was the case.. that you would have trouble grasping the RNY as you would have reactions to eating foods you ate before. I have heard of people with lapband sitting there with a 1/2 gallon of icecream .. and eating it all cuz it slides right through. So... if its a diet thing do your research and be prepared. if its not.. then i think the surgery would be a good step. it will assist you to finally lose weight. Good luck

Well I would be lying if. Said I changed my eating habits much and yes the band can be easily manipulated I never was one to ever eat a whole thing of ice cream but I'm sure there are bandsters that do. There are 2 things they say will cause band failure if you're a sweets person and a heavy snacker well that's me I thought though I would be the one who would stop after my band but I didn't .see I need the choices taken away from me which which is why dumping from sugar. Is something I need... I know that bypass is just a tool too but its a way stronger tool then the band...

I have no regrets for having RNY. It's been a challenge, that's true, but it's been worth it. I am so much healthier now, and I could not have done it without the surgery.
I am curious as to why the band didn't work for you. Did you have trouble sticking to the diet? Because you'll need to follow a strict diet after a gastric bypass. If that was an issue for you with the band, I hope you've dealt with it before having surgery again.

I wonder how you are doing; did you go get the RNY? I know a nurse that had lap band and has not lost any weight but he admits and I have seen him eat large plates of food. He has confessed he overeats and throws up. Please take care of yourself and hope you find the right solution for yourself.

Rain thanks for asking I was doing really good 3 weeks out 25lbs down feeling good learning to eat and drink taking all required meds and vitamins and then all of the sudden didn't feel so well. I write this from my hospital bed , my not feeling so well ended up being blood clots in my lungs..it was more scary hearing that then anything. I'm doing ok now on blood thinners and being monitored. I'm just taking it one day at a time and keeping a positive attitude. It just shows how truly serious the surgery is..but I'm still not regretting it.

My heart goes out to you and hope that you know my prayers will go out for you everyday,Please do as Dr.'s say. I'm glad you were able to get your laptop at least when you are feeling okay you can get online. Will help take mind off things surfing web. Surgery is so scary but you have to put your life in God's hands, he will watch over you. I have a cousin who has been living with 3 blood clots in his lungs now for over 3 yrs. He stays monitored by his drs. He has some restrictions as I'm sure your Dr has spoke to you about. I'm just thankful you are responded in here. I love this web site and read it as often as I can (seldom post). I have yet to reach 150 lbs. I stay between 192 and 200. I know why and trying to deal with it. When a friend asked me about lap bands verse RNY I have sent her here; so she can learn. So I found you now I will try to keep up with your health so please keep writing and letting us know what's happening to you. God Bless and hold you tight.

Hi BlueEyes - I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble. It must've been really scary. I'm having revision to RNY as well and I'm a nervous wreck. I'd love if you could share with me since you've now gone through it (how'd you do up until this happened, etc.) I hope you get better real soon.
