Good luck, Janie! I hope you find relief soon and I hope you do come back and keep us posted. You have a lot of information to share, you communicate it well, and we all need to hear the good, the bad, AND the ugly. You are part of the story, the history of GBS, and I hope that at some point you'll want to share the later chapters of that story. Godspeed!

I think a reversal is an important thing to discuss on this board. It would be wonderful to think that you two are the last two to ever have such complications from RNY, but you won't be. If you keep the information out there - somewhere such as here - not only will we be able to be there for you, your important information will be there for others.
|
I can't agree more - I am just in the process of making my final arrangements, to hopefully get my surgery done at the end of September, and you (Janie), Paige, Carrie and Lisa have been in my thoughts these last couple of days and your posts form a big part for me (and others to follow) being able to make an informed decision.
Please don't stop posting and know that you (all of you) will be in my thoughts as I am moving towards the consequences of the biggest decision that I've ever made in my life...

Thank you for the kind words....
I wish you the very best, be kind to yourself after surgery and remember those of us with these long term serious complications are very rare. Possible but rare!
Good luck!

Janie and Paige,
I think I understand how alone and blowing in the breeze you both might feel right now. I still wonder if I made the right choice for my body, and even though right now I feel pretty good, I still think I probably cut some years off my life by doing this. It's a crap shoot, for sure.
As I read through all the postings on this thread I can see (I think) how you might feel somewhat abandoned by the group. "Keep us posted" can sound a lot like "we must get together for lunch sometime..." as far as those insincere social niceties go. I personally hope you (both) will choose to continue to come to this board NOT just to keep people informed of what complications can arise or to provide education to newcomers. I'm hoping you will continue to come here because you are cared about and known and can get support for who you are and how you feel--mentally, physically, and spiritually by those of us who have come to know you and care about you. The size of one's pouch is not an indicator of eligibility to post here. This site is more to me than a place to talk about my WLS, it is a place where I have met people who are chosen family to me can be found. And the two of you are people that I have come to know and care about as people--not as members of some elite club that you now must renounce your membership in. My guess is that there are a lot of us on here who would agree with me on this. That would make me a "pouchist"!
Sept 6 is coming up fast. I am having back surgery on Sept 4, so I'm telling you in advance that while I won't be on line, please know that I will be thinking of you and hoping that you are doing well. I hope someone lets someone on the board know how it's gone for you; I will be checking in to see how things went when I get home.
Take care of you, each of you--you have a hard enough road to travel without feeling like you have to travel it alone. Know that you are loved and cared about, because you are.

Janie, I'm new here so I don't know what you've been through but it must have been hell for you to make the decision to reverse (both you & Paige). The fact that it can go so wrong is so important for someone like me who is just starting the process to know. I want to have all the facts--not just the pie-in-the sky ones that the bariatric centers focus on.
I will be praying for both you & Paige as you have your surgeries done. I hope that it will restore your health & your quality of life.

Thank you for your nice post, and yes I think everyone needs to go into this surgery with their eyes wide open. I know for me a lot of this was blue skied.. and I was told a lot of different information. There are some people like a few here Paige, myself, Trina, Van, and a few more that have not tolerated the surgery well. For a couple of us we face reversing. I never wanted to be in this position EVER! However I am, and I'm going to accept it.. because it makes it easier to deal with. So for me it was a failed surgery. For you I hope your journey is pain free. Janie

Just read this on the web
I've been bouncing off the walls since scheduling my reversal. I wish it was overwith already and I was in the recovery stage! I think I was more excited about the initial surgery than I am with this one. They take them down in other countries.. after a couple of years to avoid vitamin deficiencies? I've never heard of this. This one just plain scares the shit out of me! J
http://gastricbypass.netfirms.com/reversal.htm
"The patient may end up thinking that reversals are never needed but there is definitely strong evidence to the contrary. And many WLS surgeons say they have never done a reversal, not because it wasn't needed but because they had chosen to not become involved in reversals. Reversals tend to be more difficult surgeries than the original procedures and equally risky (although I've never known a patient to die from a reversal and most regain their health to some degree rather soon after a reversal). According to one nurse who lived in the UK, some hospitals outside the United States, takedown gastric bypass surgery after a year or two, in order to avoid long term vitamin deficiencies."

We'll be praying for you too. I know that decision could not have been easy, but it's good that you are taking control of your situation. I sure hope that everything goes well and wish you a very speedy recovery. Please be sure to keep us posted on how it goes.

Wow.. I think the number of people having them done would drastically drop if it were necessary to reverse ALL of them because of vitamin deficiencies.. seems it would be cheaper and easier to just take the vitamins you are deficient in until you arent.
A lot of us on the board cant wait for you to be on the healing side of this as well Janie.. It has to be torture just sitting and waiting.. I would think even more so than before as well..
Best of luck
