Default Question about drains

I'm getting close to getting my tummy tuck done and I was wondering if it is standard to have drains and about how long you had to keep them in.

Thanks

I think they are pretty standard (not 100% positive though -- maybe someone else can answer that for you). My drain was only supposed to remain in during my hospital stay and be removed the morning I went home but I had some blood mixed in w/the fluid and my doctor decided it would be safer to leave it in for 1 week. He removed it at his office 1 week post-op. I didn't hurt at all but it sure was gross to look at lol

My mother had drains in for about 3 or 4 weeks I believe. One on each side.

My doctor drained his first 500 patients. I hear it hurts pretty bad... ???

Although, now he is only draining ones that are questionable in the least. They fill the pouch with air to check for bubbles before exiting the surgery. He says 1 in 10 get drained.

Hi Mike,

I did mean for the tummy tuck. I had gbs in 2006 and I had a drain that only needed to stay in a week. It was gross but not that bad.

I'm assuming that I will need drains after the tuck. I just don't know how long I will need them. I was hoping not longer than a week or two. I don't want to go back to work with gross drains attached

Default Drains

I had my drain in one each side for 2 weeks. The Dr told me she wanted them to drain less than 30mls in 24 hours before she would take them out.. I hated them as they were a pain to have them... though not pain in that scence. They were a bit painful taking them out but it was all over very quickly!

I had 2 drains for the tummy tuck and 2 for the breast lift. The ones in my breast area were out in a little over a week. My tummy tuck drains were in longer, about 2-3 weeks. My PS wanted to see less than 30ml of drainage within a 24 hour period before he removed them.
