Default Help: Chili without the chili peppers??

I have my chili cooking in the crockpot... all ready to go.. BUT we forgot to pick up the chili peppers!!

Now what? I can't run to the store for any.. the little market down the street doesn't carry any.. and I'm currently waiting for the roofer to show up as the roof leaks, so I can't head out to the closest real grocery store, which is more than 20 miles away.

I have lots of crushed red pepper.. would something like that work as a sub? or something else? ideas? damn.. this is my first chili I've ever made in my life and I screw it up

Hmm. Depends on the recipe you are using. I used dried chili powder. My recipe calls for cumin and chilli powder. without either of these, you will be making something other that chilli! Nice to have real chilli's but where I live, there is no such thing. Can you try to find the dried stuff - and in a real pinch, there are premade spice packets in most supermarkets ie: clubhouse seasonings that are chili spiced and already to go into the pot. Hope this helps. Chili is my staple!

Default Cumin

Cumin and chili powder will work if you have those...taco seasoning would work, too if you have that. The pepper flakes will give it heat but not the chili taste you're looking for. Hope this helps....

If you are going to the store anyway................... if your chilli is runny - too much liquid, add a can of refried beans for sauce. YUMMY! And I add a drained can of whole kernal corn too - makes it sweet - more fiber.

Thanks everyone...I'm using the "Wendy's Chili" recipe that Duckie posted... and I do have the chili powder and cumin so I guess I'll be okay, there just won't be any heat, lol.

Grandma.. I can't run to the store.. the closest one is over 20 miles away and I'm still waiting for the roofer to come & fix my roof My kitchen now has a huge water stain around the woodstove pipe. Bummer.

Lol Kel. It's virtually impossible to screw chili up. I don't even use a recipe when I make it, which is probably why it turns out slightly different every time.

But I'm amazed that you never made chili before! It's a staple in my house. Every month or so, I'll make up a big electric roaster full of it (20 quarts!). I freeze most of it for quick, easy meals later on. Actually we just had frozen chili for dinner last night.

My DH doesn't like the heat of real peppers, so I usually use chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, cilantro, and a bit of red pepper powder. Sometimes I throw in a packet of taco seasoning. Ranch dressing mix also gives it a good flavor.

I posted a recipe for Taco Soup recently, which is really good. It's kind of like chili, but it has a different taste to it.
