I started having serious breathing issues and stopped drinking diet soda (coincidence). I happened to notice within a few days to a week my breathing was better and could lay off my inhalers. A few months later I caved and went back to drinking diet soda. Within days my asthma was HORRIBLE and I was needing my breathing treatments again. AGAIN I stopped the diet soda's and my breathing returned to normal. Coincidence??? I don't think so. I did some research on the web and found supporting evidence of this! For a kick I decided to check out my theory and started drinking diet soda again (third time) and yikes.. breathing worsened! I haven't had diet soda since then. I was a long time diet soda drinker and I believe the chemicals built up in my body.
I'm just giving my opinion here. Not trying to start anything. Just food for thought. I'm sure it's a lovely recipe.

Some people do have problems with artificial sweeteners, especially aspartame (Equal). It seems like you're one of the unlucky people.
I personally use Splenda instead of aspartame, whenever possible.
The purpose of the diet pop in the recipe is for the flavor. It cooks down with the ketchup and makes a sweet tasting BBQ sauce. You could actually use regular pop (with sugar), but then of course the nutritional stats of the recipe are going to change quite a bit.
