Default Ham and Bean Soup

1 1/2 cups chopped ham
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped celery
1 teaspoon garlic salt
2 teaspoons salt
3/4 teaspoons black pepper
3 1/2 tablespoons oil
5 3/4 cups water
1 pound great northern beans

Soak beans in water overnight. Sauté ham, onion, and celery in oil. Add to beans. Cook approximately 3 hours. About 20 minutes before done, add salts and pepper. Remove 2 cups of beans, mash and return to beans. Heat through.

sounds delicious - I hope I love it when I get on the other side..

This recipe raises a question for me: do people "watch their salt" intake post op or is "water retention" not as much an issue??

I don't add salt to my cooking I let everybody add their own. I have never experienced a problem from it.

I going to make this when I get home from work today. Hey do you think its ok to use one ham hock instead of the chopped ham?

I think that would be fine. The hock would probably give it a better flavor too. Let us know of the outcome tomorrow.

I will let you know. I have been wanting to make soup for three days now and couldn't decide what kind. I bought Navy, Lima, and Great Northern. Just couldn't decide which one to make. This has just made up my mind for me. LOL
