a basic guideline and then each person can add and subtract according to their palate. I use a 32 oz mug.....1 Tbs cocoa powder, any amount of dry milk you want, and about 6 sweetener packs (whatever kind you like)......add hot, but not boiling water (or dry milk curdles), and then taste it and tweak it. I also add SF syrups to mine a lot....vanilla, butter rum, black cherry, amaretto, etc.

8-10oz cup....I use this recipe....1 /2 tsp cocoa, 1/3 cup skim milk powder, 2-3 packets of splenda and then hot water.
|
Here is Gina's recipe:
Quote:
We used 1/2 cup dry milk, 3 tsp. cocoa (it might be alittle less - he was measuring) and 2 packs of splenda for 8 oz of water. Very chocolatey but not too bitter.
Also, we needed it to be quick, so we mixed up a quart of the mix and scoop out 1/2 cup at a time so it is always ready for us. Next time, who knows, maybe less chocolate? BUt we did find that any more dry milk and it tasted funny.

make cocoa with skim milk powder, 2-3 tsp of cocoa (low fat version) and 2 packets of splenda - add hot water.

I have to ask...why does everyone use powdered milk for hot cocoa? Is it just because it's not perishable and is convenient to keep around? I'm asking because from what I can tell, it doesn't really have more protein per serving?
I made some hot cocoa today with the recipe from the cocoa can (substituting Splenda for the sugar) and it was SO GOOD. WAY better than the premixed stuff available in packets. I don't think I'll ever drink the other stuff again!

I use it because I can put as much as I want to increase the value of Protein and it's never too strong for me. I love whole milk, so I can get alot of protein from mixing it with dry milk that is nonfat and I just add more powder than one serving calls for, which is 1/3 cup of dry milk powder to 8 ounces of water, because I like the strong milk flavor. If I had to drink a cup of skim milk instead of a cup of powdered milk that I had mixed, I'd chose the powdered milk because of the milkier taste because I add extra powder. That's MY reason and joy for using it. Also, you can put it to cream soups, mashed potatoes, etc, and other drinks and not increase the fluid content because it would be hard to get more fluid in, so get the protein without actually adding quantity to what you are drinking. I put it in coffee too...plus my vanilla or chocolate protein powder, which ever I'm in the mood for. Hope I explained this well enough. Do be careful though. Dry milk powder does have calories! Just add them into your daily totals. It REALLy helps in the beginning when you are struggling to get calories in.

I am struggling to get food and calories in. I have to have a revision done because the doctor that did my surgery made my intestines too short. I will have this surgery very soon, just waiting for the approval to come through.
I am really lactose intolerant is powdered milk the same or have the same effect? I am too sick to chance trying it first. Janie

Janie, I really don't know what to tell ya about that one hun. I developed lactose intolerance after surgery and certain types of cheese KILLS me and so does regular 2% milk, but the dry milk does not bother me. Strange, huh? I have to drink Lactose Free Milk in the 1/2 gallon carton if I want just plain milk to drink. But if I add the powdered milk to something, it don't bother me. I guess it's trial and error with certain dairy products. I wish I could help more. So what are they going to do about your intestines being too short???? That sounds complicated! I hope you do okay. Keep us posted when your surgery is so we can keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Oh, have you tried chewing the Lactaid tablets right before you eat dairy? Those will help you digest dairy and you should be able to eat or drink it then. It's worth a try.....

I guess I will have to try the dry milk, been afraid to because I've been so sick. I am told I'm going to need a couple more surgeries, I'll know more next week. I'm a pretty private person, don't share too much personal information on this forum, or any online forum for that matter. I do have a very large support system and family around me who help and care for me. I also have avery good surgeon who is going to correct the damage done from the first. Thanks for asking, and offering support it is very touching. Janie

The skim milk powder is nice to add to a variety of things to increase the protein content...as well is lower in fat than regular milk.
I like the convenience of it...make up the cocoa milk ahead of time and you can take it anywhere with you. I travel away from home quite a bit, and its nice to have with you for a change from coffee, tea or cold drinks.
I cook with the skim milk powder quite a bit in my house and its always there as a back up when we run out of milk!
