Glucose testing in pregnancy
Hi guys.. quick question. My sis has me freaked out because i dont know how we are supposed to do the glucose testing if you are a post op gastric bypass. Can we even get gestational diabetes??? and how are our bodies supposed to handle a sugar syrupy drink? I luckily tolerate sugar to some extent but i am so not looking forward to be sick because the doctor says i have to have this test done because they know nothing about post op surgery people.

I don't know why we couldn't get gestational diabetes. But did you tell them you can't tolerate that much sugar? I don't know if there is another way to test for gestational diabetes or not... but I would be very hesitant to drink something I thought would likely make me dump.

I have a feeling there is such a sufficient lack of evidence about the testing in post WLS patients that your doc will put it back on you to decide whether you feel you can handle the risk of having gestational without knowing it or if you are willing to dump (which would effectively invalidate the test anyhow because you need the syrup in you to measure how you process it). Gest. Diabetes is one of those things we can test for, so we do. There are some real risks with it, but from the beginning of time, before GD testing, women had larger babies and just wrote if off as a big baby. Little to truly be concerned about (I went through two GD pregnancies). If it turns out you are GD, you have to be monitiored and be very good about your diet. As post WLS, you already do follow a diabetic friendly diet. In my opinion....

I'm pretty sure we can get gestational diabetes post op...'cause you can still HAVE diabetes post-op.
I'm sure that Jeannie (and other's) with pregnancy post-op experience will give you a correct answer!

First of all, you have the right to refuse any test that your doctor wants to do to you. I told my doctor numerous times I was NOT doing the glucose test. I told him I can't handle the sugar and unless he wanted to do the test in a hospital setting, it wasn't getting done. It's your body hun, and no one can stick a needle in it without your permission.....unless you were on death row....but that's another story.
Anyways, my doctor did some research and just had me eat 10 jelly beans an hour before the blood draw. Yeah I wasn't happy about it, but I ate the candy and was okay.

You could also ask your doctor for one of those blood testers and just monitor your blood sugar for a few days. If you track it, you'll know.

Jenny is right, you don't *have* to take any tests you don't want to and Kay is right, you can track your blood sugar several times a day for a week or so and see what the numbers are. Even skinny girls can get GD its just not as common of course. Just last weekend at a baby shower a guest who is an RN was saying how she didn't take the glucose tests and just tracked her blood sugar for a awhile to show her doctor and he was fine with it.

Heather, I've been wondering about the glucose testing too, and I totally forgot to ask my OB at my appointment last week.
Like someone mentioned above, I wonder if we can just get a monitor and track the results for a couple of weeks instead. That's definitely what I would prefer to do if I can. I had a 6 hour glucose test (or maybe it was 4 hours?) several years ago, and I got sick and weak from it...and that was way before WLS.

I did the test. It wasn't that bad. I have made myself dump because of things I chose to eat, so why couldn't I handle dumping to make sure my baby was safe, and not in danger. It is your choice to do it or not for me there was no chocie. I did it, and all though the stuff taste horrible I just laid my head on my hubby's shoulder & just went to sleep. I have four very close friends that have had GBS & they all did the test also and no one got overly sick. My best advice is make sure the stuff is cold.

I will not do this period. I dump on just about everything and I couldn't tolerate the glucose test with any other pregnancy. I will not put myself through that. I monitor my blood sugar now so not worried.
