Current recommendations are to ask your obstetrician to monitor your own glucose levels and check Hgb A1C (if this just sounded like a foreign language, print off this page and take it with you to your next appointment). You will need to obtain a glucometer (glucose monitoring kit) and check your blood sugars when you first wake up in the morning (fasting blood sugar) and 2 hours after a meal (post-prandial blood sugar). This will give gastric bypass patients more accurate documentation when screening for gestational diabetes. Good luck. I asked the OB/GYN's I work with and this is what I was told

Ask about the A1C test instead it is a blood test that averages your blood sugar over a period of 3 months the only think you do for this is fast if that comes back high then I would do the other test possibly even though I dump because diabetes could be dangerous for the baby but I would TELL them to do the A1C test first....

Kim, I'm assuming that you mean that you monitor your levels with with the thingy that tests your blood after you stick your finger, right? (Yeah, I know there's a name for the device, but I have pregnancy brain, lol.) If so, how many times a day do you check, when did you start, and how long do you have to do it?

I still use my glucose meter even though I no longer take meds but now I do it because I am hypoglycemic....Anyway you can buy a meter for 20.00 a nice one touch but you have to get the strips in a prescription from your Dr. When you test you test first thing in the morning before putting anything in your mouth then 2 hours after you eat. Your Dr can tell you what he/she thinks your numbers should be since everyone is different.....For me my first check in the morning I should not have been too much over 100 and 2 hours after I ate no more than 125 or right in that area depends on the Dr....But instead of buying that get your A1C checked first and that will be an indicator if your glucose needs watching....I hope this helped some..

I refused the testing. I have heard so many horrible stories of pregnant women doing the test and it not going well at all. I wont say what I have heard or read I dont want to scare anyone but... you can refuse I did.

Default Free Glucose Monitors

If you need to get a glucose monitor you can get them for free from Accucheck (1-800-858-8072) They sent me the CompactPlus when I first found out I had Diabetes a year ago.
