Default Did you use Birth Control?

Hi Ladies,
I'm so excited. I'm haveing my RNY 4 weeks from today! They had an opening and put me in it! Yay!

So I met w/ the Dr. on Friday and Hubby brought up the whole "avoid pregnancy" thing. We've been fighting IF since we got married in 2007 and spent A LOT of $$ last year on IF treatments. I swore then and there that I wouldn't ever use BC again. So I'm thinking maybe I won't TRY to get PG in the months following surgery, but I really don't want to use anything. I mean if it FINALLY happens for us I will only see it as a blessing.

Anybody out there been in a similar position?
How long after surgery did you get preggo? Any complications I should be aware of?

You really should wait an absolute minimum of a year before getting pregnant. Most surgeons recommend 18-24 months. If you're not willing to do hormonal birth control, I recommend getting a book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and look into natural family planning. It's in your best interest to put off trying (or not avoiding) to get pregnant too soon.

If you don't want to use anything but don't want to get preggo... I recommend abstaining from sex then. It is pretty common sense, I could swear we teach this to teens nowadays. Everytime you have sex you have a chance of getting pregnant. I've seen too many "oops" on here early postop.

Oh, gosh. They usually recommend you wait at least a year after surgery, sometimes longer, to get pregnant, because you can have complications if you get pregnant while you are still losing lots of weight. I really, really encourage you to use birth control until it's safe to get pregnant. Why risk your health and the health of your baby?

Funny, my surgeon brought this up the other day-- EVERYONE in the office has emphasized this is a big deal (apparently because I am young this means I sleep around lol )

I have been told to double up on birth control while having sex. It has also been emphasized that I shouldn't even think of getting pregnant for two years as my body nutritionally would not be able to support another life to it's full capacity.

As Kelly mentioned not using birth control(condoms or otherwise) and still having sex is only risking your health as well as your babies.

I wish you the best.

Different doctors recommend different times to wait...12 months, 18 months, 24 months, etc. I all depends on YOU, how much weight you have to lose, etc. The best bet is to ask your doctor and see what he/she recommends.

Definitely use birth control! As soon as you start losing weight your fertility will skyrocket. Don't risk your health or that of your baby by becoming pregnant too early. I've heard that birth control pills aren't as effective for us because of the malabsorption issue, so you'll need to use condoms as well.

As for me, we waited 15 months before we started trying. I was pretty shocked that I got pregnant the very first month, because I didn't think it would happen that easily because I'm a little older. After years of having PCOS, my obstetrician now refers to me as "Fertile Myrtle".

Initially we just kinda refused to have sex.. lol that was great birth control. But once my PCOS symptoms disappeared about 2 months after surgery, we decided we had to do something. So i went on Yaz for a month. Then got freaked out that my periods would be funky again if i continued it, like when i was younger. So i went off of it and we just avoided that time of month we always were used to striving for. Except last month.. and well now i am 4/5 weeks pregnant.. it was kinda planned though i am only 10 months out. I know i will get flack for it.. but we've been married for 15 years and didnt want to wait for a miracle to happen.. just didn't expect it sooo fast! truely blessed. But remember things will change after WLS drastically and you may find the fertile myrtle in you!
