I was on the Depo shot for almost 6 years and while I enjoyed having no period for that time, I also had no sex drive and gained the most weight of my life. Not saying the weight gain was the shot's fault.... Just how it happened. I had been taking birth control pills for about 14 months prior to surgery, but my surgeon wanted me off of them for awhile due to risk of blood clots with surgery. So I went back to the Depo shot 1 month prior to DOS. Not only did my sex drive once again disappear, but I have now been continuously heavy spotting since about 1 week after surgery. My weight loss also slowed considerably in the last month on the shot. So, I switched back to the pill. Note: I had a VSG and NOT RNY, so I don't have the malabsorption issues. I am still spotting, which I am guessing is due to the weight loss.... which has picked up again now that I'm off the shot.
I do tend to be moodier on the pill, but I have a good libido (which my other half appreciates) and I don't have to question whether my stalls are being caused by the shot anymore. So anyways, thats been my experience. I don't know that I will ever use the Depo shot again, personally.

cheshire- as long as you haven't had RYN you can take the pill. If you've had gastric bypass, you will not absorb the medicine all the way and could get pregnant anyways...

You can still take the pill. Jeanie took the pill and had no problems. I took the mini pill and was fine on just that. Some people don't absorb it well and some do.

Cheshire- I just thought I would let you know that my heavy spotting/light flow has NOT improved since switching to the pill. It's about the same and I'm 2 full weeks into it. Which is why I'm calling my docs today- I'm very worried about Anemia. fyi

I bought some the other day for "just in cases" i havent used that yet but thinking i may just have to use that until i get the tubal. Well, in that case, I'd be afraid to try to use it. How would you know if you absorb it well or not, unless you end up pregnant when you don't want to be?

Cheshire- I'm not too educated myself on pill or no pill after RNY. I just know that I can take it fine. The spotting can be caused by a lot of things, mainly losing all the fat which stores your excess estrogen. Also, since I can see your are close to goal- could be your body trying to figure itself out... MY recommendation is to see your doc. Thats what I'm doing because I know my body is way out of whack and I don't want to get so anemic that I need iron infusions. So call your doc and get it figured out. Cuz I'm no doc. Also- ask them about the pill after RNY. I'd follow their advice, personally.

The main concern with Depo is not weight gain, but the risk of bone density loss. I've been on Depo for 9 years (and love it) but my doctor wants me to come off of it now because there aren't any studies of the effects of long term use and whether it will promote osteoporosis. I take calcium supplements and have to have bone density scans every few years, and now that I'm showing a slight change they don't want me to continue. They say Depo wasn't intended for long term use. I'm disappointed because I do love the convenience of a single shot every 3 months. I don't trust myself to remember to take a pill every day (and the lack of periods is certainly a big plus).
My doc told me that if and when I finally do go through with WLS, I should definitely be on another birth control method. People on Depo are already at risk of bone density loss, so that risk is extra extra high for people who have undergone a weight loss procedure. I haven't had surgery (yet) so my absorption is normal, I take extra calcium & D every day, and now I'm starting to lose bone mass (I'm only 38). So for a WLS patient to stay on Depo my doctor says is a bad idea.
