My sugar tolerance is very low, I can't even drink about 2oz of gatorade so there was no way they were going to get me to drink that sugar crap. They tried to force to do it and I consulted my surgeon and he told me NO they can do a fasting test so that is what I demanded and what they did. They made me fast for the first blood draw then sent me to the cafeteria to eat a balanced meal (I had like a little bit of scrambled eggs, piece of bacon, some fresh fruit and a few sips of Orange or Apple juice). Then I came back and waited an hour and they drew my blood. And my results were fine.
You all are some tough woman! Cause there is no way I would of or could of done that gluclose test. I am proud of you gals!

Well I did it because I wanted to make sure that everything was ok I did not even think twice when my doc told me that it is a needed test and that it can cause problems if not caught early in the pregnancy. I mentioned the bypass and he told me there was another way to do the test but it would take about 3 hours to do or I could take the drink and be done with in an hour so I opted to feel horrible for 20 minutes so I could get the results they needed and well I LIVED!!! it sucked but it did not suck any worse then if I would have eaten something too sweet. I will do anything to make sure that lil bebe boy is doing ok in there after the scares we have had I am doing all the tests needed putting everything that makes me feel horrible aside cause it is not about me anymore it is about that lil baby boy growing inside. Everyone has their own feelings and tolarances and that is just what I have decided to do. Anyone who has to have it done however they choose I hope the results come back with positive results and that baby and you are both ok.

I am happy you both sucked it up (no pun intended) and had the test. I had Gestational Diabetes with my son and it was BAD... My OB took me out of work two months before my due date, I was taking 3 insulin shots a day and they NEVER got it under control. My Dr. was flipping out that the Internist couldn't get it under control...he would yell at her on the phone saying my baby could die and I COULD HEAR HIM... it was very stressful. My son wasn't due until Dec. 20th...they induced early and he was still 9lbs. 1oz. Keep us updated on the results!!!

My results are just fine I was just where I should be which was a load off of my mind. Diabetes runs in my family so I am glad everything has been going normal now and we have not had anymore scares and I have been feeling good just a little tired from planning the wedding and running around all over town carrying a little extra load.

I spoke to my doc last week about the upcoming test. He advised me that I would have to drink 5oz of a sugary drink. I could choose to eat jelly beans if I felt I couldn't do the drink. I'm going to test with the drink, I've dumped on worse!!! Besides, I just LOVE feeling my baby move...it's amazing

5 or 50? Cause the one they gave me was the size of a small water bottle and was 50. I hope you get less!

Just so you guys know, the GTT isn't really all that valid for us. The sugars are absorbed more rapidly (since it doesn't sit in your stomach and goes right into the intestine). By the time the hour is up, you have already spiked and are on your way down. I refused the test both times and check my blood sugars regularly...but I am also uber careful with what I eat.
Oh, and it is a 5 oz bottle...probably 50 g of glucose.

I have been going through the same thing. This is our first child....a boy. But, I am starting later in life(35) so I automatically fall into the "high risk" group for pregnancy. I had the Lap Band surgery in 2001. Seems like such a long time ago!! I passed the first two gestational diabetes tests, and this last one done two weeks ago(that was six weeks out)...I failed. I now have to prick my finger four times a day, give myself two insulin shots a day, and see a specialist once a week. Shesh. Now, that I can handle...even hating needles! But what I haven't been able to handle....insomnia, excessive saliva and drooling/coughing at night. For the past two months I have slept sitting up.....and even sitting up I choke and cough on my own saliva ALL night long. The first hour I go to bed I zonk out...and then it starts. I am sitting up propped up against 4 pillows and I am still choking on my own saliva. I just don't get it. No one ever warned me about this. And, I do think it has something to do with my lap band as I still have 2 CC's in the band. If there is a next pregnancy, I will have the CC's removed. I haven't had any removed this time because its a three hour drive....and another $400 bill I just didn't want to deal with. Do you think that the band is causing the excess saliva and GERD?
This week I welcomed edema...my feet and ankles are swollen to the max. If you work full time like me, you will need to find a comfy pair of shoes for work. Madness I tell you. But all will be worth it in a few weeks.....thats the only way I am getting through it day to day. Oh, and I found out yesterday my little boy has a head full of hair!! lol |
