Default First blood tests?

Hey ya'll! (BTW, thanks for this sub-forum)

Ok ... so tomorrow I will be 9 weeks. I'm so excited, but also so confused. I've had a hard time finding much information on pregnancy after gastric bypass. I'm a member of the yahoo OSSG-Pregnancy group, so they are a wealth of information, which helps.

Prior to my surgery 5.5 years ago, I was diabetic. So my OB is concerned that'll come back. OB told me I needed to do the gluclose intolerance test (?) and went on to explain they would do a fasting blood draw then I'd have to drink some sugar drink and do the blood draw again. This sent up red flags in my head and I reminded her about my surgery ... so after some asking around, she's telling me I have to do a fasting blood draw, then eat a "normal" breakfast and go back in two hours.

Has anyone had experience with these tests? What should I eat?

Another question ... since I found out I'm pregnant, I've lost weight (12 lbs the first week) ... I've been doing everything normal and haven't been throwing up. Should I be worried? My OB says they're familiar with post-op pregnancies, but I'm not too sure.

Thanks!
Christy

Hey Sweety,

I had the same problem. They kept pushing for me to do the gluclose test as well as they kept saying it wasn't all sugar...I said NO WAY..Not going there. So they did do the test the way your talking about. I fasted they drew my blood, then I went to the hospital Cafe ate a breakfast and had to sit around for an hour and then drew my blood again...Wasn't bad at all..Turned out great...I ate one scrambled egg, one piece of bacon and a piece of cheese and drank some water..

I also didn't gain any weight in the beginning..I didn't start gaining until I was about 5 months..I was sooo scared but then poof it all came together. I just made sure that I was eating. I still till this day eat about 6 times a day. Very small things but I eat. In the beginning I couldn't eat that one egg, bacon and cheese but I can now. So in the beginning I might have just eaten the egg and then hour or two later ate something else small and so and so on..I can eat way better now that I am farther along.

Wish you luck...If you need anything else let me know!

Christy I agree with Ree. Don't allow them to do that Glucose Tolerance Test. It is like dumping sugar on top of your pouch. My OB told me to eat a tuna sandwich and wait an hour and then get my blood drawn. Be sure to instruct your doctor about what dumping is and how it is caused. Believe it or not, there are a lot of doctors who are still uneducated about GBS let alone being pregnant after having GBS. Also when your doctor gives your lab slip make sure that they write out the way the glucose testing is to be done so that the lab won't give you any drama about they way it is suppose to be done.

I also lost weight during my pregnany. The baby is going to take with she/he needs. If nothing else be sure to get all your protein in and prenatals. Very important. You are still early in your pregnancy so I am sure they may want to do the Glucose testing on you a couple of times during your pregnancy. Being scared is a normal feeling when you first find out you are pregnant, that feeling will fade as you get further in your pregnancy.

Thanks so much ladies ... it's so hard with so little information available out there.

I just ordered back issues of "WLS Lifestyle" Magazine cause there is one article in there about being pregnant after GBS that someone told me about.

My dr says they're familiar with pregnancy after GBS, but I'm just not feeling they're really all that knowledgable. We'll see!

Thanks again!

Just an update ... I did my fasting blood work ... then came home, ate an egg w/cheese and some bacon and went back in two hours. Luckily the first time I was there they told me they needed urine ... so I went back and did that and some more blood.

UGH. So many tubes of blood ... and I'm anemic. So blah ... I did ok though and my drs appt is June 13th, so we'll see how I did. Praying I don't have gestational diabeties ... or anything else.

Thanks again for the info!

Christy

Christy,

I was about your size with my first pregnancy. I lost weight first trimester (that is common) and only gain 12 pounds overall. It is the first time that being larger was a good thing. We didn't need to lay down fat for storage for the baby and ourselves. Your weight may stay the same, but it will shift to the pregnant belly.

I hope your glucose studies come back and make sure you take your iron!!! Your blood volume is going to increase and you need that iron.
