well, it wasn't that I was trying to get anyone... just think it's a good idea for anyone to get a few things to try ahead of time.
I know I wasn't up for shopping for a good long time. My first trip to the grocery store didn't happen for three weeks, and half way through I had to go sit & rest. It was an outright disaster.

I'd be happy to be your buddy. My surgery is about a month from yours and I could probably stand to learn a bit from you.
I also used to live in Arizona, so ....

Well that list had some impact did'nt it. lol. My feeling is this. Currently I'm a foodie and initially one of my fears about being post-op. was not being able to eat the types of foods that I enjoy - I love to experiment with food. So I've source out a few products that can be used for seasoning/flavouring. When the time is right (post-op) I will buy in some meat and fish products, beans etc. It's important to note I'm not having a GB, but the VSG. Most of the people that I've spoken to who have had the surgery, report that they are able to eat practiculary anything they like - it is mostly restrictive surgery. There is an unlikely chance of dumping; taste buds may change slightly but not necessarily.
I am currently not in full employment - so i thought it best to buy what i feel are products to get me started when I come out of hospital.
In the early stages I notice that other people usually eat jelly and pudding. So I've spent my waiting time looking/sourcing products that will be of use to me in the future. I've not bulk bought anything, I think the most I've got any one thing of is the Davinci syrups, hoping to use them in some of the shakes amongst other things.
My doctors have not even told me what they will be recommending in terms of meal plans; I've learnt so much from you guys to tell the truth. So in a nut shell my list consist of what I need to go into hospital, the equipment and starter protein when I come out of hospital - and storage containers to keep my food seperate from the family as well as containers to travel with and thats it.
Anyway, I hope my list gets others who are pre-op. thinking about the things they may need post-op. I feel so ready.

A couple of things- I do like those fit & fresh containers though you will find them kind of big post op for a long while
And I'd check with your doctor about the seeds and nuts.. you don't want to get those stuck in any healing incisions.
Good luck

I've been finding other VSG'ers, and many of them are eating a handful of popcorn at around 3 months. I still think that's a little too close to call for me, and it's not on my surgeon's plan (although everything on the plan is geared for RNY). I figure it can't hurt much at all to eat like I did bypass. I know that having the restriction will inhibit my binging habit, but I can't just put crap in.

slight hijack.. your date is coming up soon!
I think we'd all be better off just 'not going there'.. honestly.. leaving popcorn alone after a handful is just not that easy. I've banished from the house..though it does not bother me at all, I just can't stop once I start!

I know! And they moved the time down to 9:30 a.m. instead of 1 p.m.! (That's 12:30 eastern)
But yeah, the whole popcorn thing threw me for a loop. I've been known to eat an ENTIRE bucket, dripping with salt, and ask for a refill. Plus nachos. Think of all the money I'm going to save when I go to the movies now! I was figuring I could have a few pieces in like six or eight months... so long as someone else is with me to move the bag away.
That issue about having it so soon... that's why I'm here and not at a forum dedicated to sleeve talk. It just seems counter-productive. Yes, VSG patients are able to eat a larger variety of foods closer to what we used to, but does that really mean we should? For me, it's a big FAT "no."

Goober- here's my take on the popcorn thing- post op it will be physically impossible for you to eat more than a handful. End. Of. Story.
You will be shocked when, immediately post-op it will be extremely difficult to even SIP fluids- it will be painful beyond belief! So yes, when you get to about 3 months out, a few bits of popcorn (or the like) will be a treat, albeit a small one.
We're not all perfect, and while at first it is easy, easy, easy to refuse "bad" food choices.... at a few months out it is AMAZING to feel like hey, I can have a bite of that bad food and be totally 100% satisfied and move on! Woohoo! At least that's where I'm at and it feels great. Just follow the rules and don't BUY the junk for having at home. Thats when it becomes a very slippery slope!

Styxchic76 - sorry I took a while to get back, but the tread got hi-jacked somewhat.
To be honest I don't believe you need to buy food products at this stage, and I don't think its ever too early to start buying in stuff that you might need. So if we exclude stacking up on protein powders (except for samples), and start to think practically, I'm sure there are things you might wish to buy in advance of surgery. I spent a lot of time doing researching into the kind of things I may need after surgery. On youtube there are so many people posting who have had WLS, some of them list the things they have bought and of course you can see them. So, you decide if you think some of the things are useful to you. I also recognised that many people buy products only to find after surgery they did'nt really need them after all. So, I've brought a few sugar free products that can be used to enhance flavours or complement them including shakes. For sure you know you will be eating smaller portions so smaller cutlery seems to make sense to me. I did'nt opt for baby spoons cause I know I aint using them outside of my home. I don't think you need to panic, as long has you have good storage containers, equipment do blend foods with and the ability to measure out your food. The rest can come as you progress. I live in the UK - so it was important for me to find out what was available to me - choice of sugar free, low carb and low fat products so at least I know where I will be able to source these things when the time comes. Good Luck.
