Default Pre-Op High Blood Pressure - Will my surgery go ahead?

I've just read on TT that one of the members was told that should her blood pressure be too high that they may not go ahead with her surgery. It could be cancelled. OMG, I know my blood pressure is very high, depite medications (6) difficult to control. Early on in this journey, my blood pressure was running at 222/189 (yeah, time bomb I know), they told me that if it did not come down I would not be able to have the surgery. I was referred back to the hypertention dept. where they have been trying to control my bloold pressure for the past 8 months or so. It's come down somewhat, but still high. I was later told that my surgery would go ahead, I thing because there had been some decrease. Now i've read this, i'm starting to worry again about it. I feel so frustrated waiting on a date, what if you they say they wont go ahead with it so high.

Anyone aware of how this works?

I have...er... had hypertension Pre-op, but it was controlled with medication Hyacinth. See your PCP or cardiologist if it is not under control. I suggest buying a BP cuff and take BP readings morning and night. Keep a log. If not under control tell your doc, and he can adjust your meds to get it there.

Pre op I was taking Diovan HCT, Toprol, another HCT (hydrochlorothyazide), Plavix, and 81mg aspirin to control BP. The HCT is basically a water pill for edema (swelling ankles). However, my BP was usually 140/85. You should also go "low sodium" in your diet. Look at sodium on everything. For seasoning use Potassium Chloride. This will turn things around quickly - like in days.

Now Doc has taken me off the toprol and plavix and has cut the Diovan and HCT dosage in half. BP now is 117/68. That is what losing 63 lbs will do. Cant wait to get the other 60lbs off.

Uncontrolled BP is an estoppel, but most obesity is accompanied by hypertension. Just make sure it is under control. Im pulling for you, girl!

Default Bp

Thanks Aviator.

I'm already keeping a log of my BP for the hospital. So basically, wherever I go, other hospital departments, my GP and my Primary Care Nurse, they will log my BP on my card. Yeah, I do seem to have a problem with salt, I don't use a lot when cooking but it's amazing the amount you eat in other foods without realising it, like bread for example. I love eggs and and usually put too much salt on the yoke. Also, I often feel unwell if I should eat meals that have been prepared with these ready mixed seasonings, eg. all purpose seasoning, chicken seasoning etc. So I tend to avoid these, unfortunately these kind of seasonings are often used in caribbean cooking. I suspect that salt is one of the major contributing factors to my high BP combined with stress, and I have a lot of that at the moment.

I think I might just try cutting out salt altogether for a while, that means I wont be able to eat any eggs though. lol. I'll need to mentally prepare myself for this one.

Thanks for responding to my post.
