Default Assessment Done, Yay!

Hi Vicki

I attended my pre-assessment yesterday (Friday) so have overcome another hurdle. My BP was not great still quite high, however, after a little rest the second reading had gone down a little. Lots of prodding and probing but hey, everything is everything.

Still unable to confirm a date but have been assured it is very close. Surgeon still has a back log, so could be August, but I'm in the priority list and potentially I could go for surgery late this month. Just have to wait and see. I was suggested that I should wait till after the surgery before embarking on the laser treatment. I may just take that advice. Right now I'm in need of clothes for the summer - it's well hot here in the UK at the moment, I don't want to spend money that I don't really have for clothes that may not fit me in a couple of months time. Do I have a choice? Not really.

I am not sure about the By Pass op.
The Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy is when they remove 85% of your stomach. It resembles a shirt sleeve shape when done.I think it is more like a long thin sausage. It is a fairly simple op but still major surgery. It is considered a cut it off and forget about procedure-minimal maintenance. No dumping etc etc.Have a look on this forum for the VSG group. You might find some good advice there.I did.I have photos of my op somewhere on this forum as well.I think I called the thread Beware Explicit Photos or something similar.
Good luck with your research.

Default Call back after pre-assessment - OMG

Hi guys. I attended the pre-assessment as I mentioned previously. Well this morning I got a call from the surgeons secretary asking me if I would be available to come and see them in outpatients. Apprantely, as part of the assessment they have gone through my medical records and discoverd a scan I had back in 2003 showing a shadow on my right ovary.

They would like to re-visit and do another scan as well as take some more bloods. Don't ask if this has not shook me up. I've been quite spaced out since. Of course I only really took in the negative bits. Later in the day I spoke to a friend that works at the hospital who was able to look up the letter they were about to send out to me - she read it to me and I was able to take it in this time. So they just want to be prudent and check for any tumors. This is all issues around my PCOS. They say they need to check as they don't wish to delay my surgery.

I've had a number of scares with relation to my ovaries in the past so please people pray that everything is alright. I'm due to go for this appointment this Friday at 1pm. OMG. In truth - and not in vain, Oh My God!

Hyacinth please don't jump to conclusions.
At my info night there was a lady in a similar situation to what you are in now.I forget the finer details but I know she was SO glad whatever it was had been picked up.If she hadn't of been going to have WLS she wouldn't have caught whatever it was in time. This lady ended up needing a hysterectomy and I think from memory cysts removed from her liver...???? One thing that bought me comfort was the thoroughness of the tests that they do.Anyway her surgery was a great success. It did delay her WLS for a few weeks or so BUT she lost heaps more weight than I have in much less time.
I had a hysterectomy a few years ago so if this happens to be where you are heading don't worry.I had open surgery and was a bit sore for a day or two only because I went home too early. My life was so much better after that op.I grieved after that for all the years I lost when all I had needed to do was give up that first body part!!It is a similar feeling to after you have WLS.If only you had done it earlier....
I joke that each time I have a body part removed I lose 10 years of aging with it.I am wondering what to have removed next!!!
Don't worry.It will work out.
Thinking of you.
Vicki

Default And Then......

Thanks Vicki

Ok so I've now been to the recall appointment. Would you believe it, I arrived at the appointed time, 1pm and presented my letter. Firstly, they could not find my notes and then I was not on the system for any appointment for today. The receptionist carried out his investigation and located my file, that was still with the Pre-assessment team so I had to wait for that to come over to the correct department; then I preceeded to wait, and wait, and wait. I was finally seen at 4.45pm. My husband was on the verge of leaving, he actually reached the door when they called my name. (He was anxious to get to work as he had taken much longer than anticipated).

I meet with a nice young registrar named AJ who went through my notes and queried issues about my PCOS, previous treatment around the PCOS and the CT scan and outcome of the scan I had back in 2003. He took some bloods which includes tumour markers. I have to call again on Monday to arrange a transvaginal ultrasound, needless to say that all of this will most certainly delay my surgery, very unlikely that I will be added to this months list, so I guess all being well I'll be getting a date for August. That being the case it looks like i'm going to miss my best friends 50th birthday celebrations.

Interestingly enough I managed to get a few key questions answered.

Dr Patel does not require his patients to do a pre-surgery diet. Reasons for this, a lot of patients find it too difficult and even then those that manage it are sometimes malnurished before surgery; or they eat small amounts and then binge nearer to surgery.

I will be given blood thinning drugs during surgery.

Pain relief will be administered immediately after surgery.

I will not be able to eat for at least 3 days after surgery, only small sips of water.

To avoid blood clots, some kind of equipment will be used on both legs to prevent blood clots. After surgery will be wearing hospital special edition tights. lol

I will not be meeting my surgeon until I've been admitted to hospital.

I will be given my food plan after surgery.

The rest I leave in the hands of Jah.

Default Vertical Sleeve

Dear Quilterpam

The way the gastric sleeve was explained to me, was yes they will cut off between 75% and 85% of your stomach depending on where you have the procedure done. There is no cutting and re-routing involved, so your system will work just the same as before, just that the food capacity will have changed and you'd need to make some life style changes - equal to those who have the bypass. Your stomach (sleeve) will end up in the shape of a banana, hence the slight curviture to the stomach.

Hope this helps.

Now Hyacinth you must not worry!!!
1.The transvaginal ultrasound-well I have had a few of those-you just endure them. They are not painful or take too much time.More embarrassing than anything-but my friends don't say the same.I am such a prude!!!All it involves is having the scope inserted into your vagina so they get a clearer picture. Many overweight people need to have this method of ultrasound due to stomach fat obscuring scan image-very common when you ask around. Also usually performed by females.
2.The things they put on your legs after surgery.Sounds like what I had. They are like thin shin-pads-like soccer players wear. They inflate/deflate and massage your calves when you are in bed. When out of bed they can be removed. Most people like them as they inflate/deflate with a rythm that sort of soothes you to sleep. Also takes away that blood clot fear. The tights are just like stay up stockings-really easy to wear and comfortable.
DON"T worry!!!

Default CT Scan 21st July

Hi everyone,

Just 8 hours until I go for my CT scan. I've been suffering with my stomach and totally plugged up over the last week. I know this is down to nerves, when I'm stressed i'm cool, calm and collected on the outside, but my stress always manifests itself in my stomach. I've been in such pain. Anyway, hopefully this to will pass. CT scan for Abdomen and Pelvis 8am.

I just wonder whats next for me.
