Liquid diet!
My surgery date is November 23rd, right before Thanksgiving, ahhhhh. But I was actually wondering about the liquid diet two weeks before surgery. What are some good things I can eat!?

I have found products from Unjury.com that have great tasting protein drinks. The chocolate and chicken soup flavor are great. THe soup one is suprisingly good, just make sure you follow the directions. My surgeon also said I could have all of the sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles and chicken broth that I want. The unjury soup drink counts as one of your protein drinks so it is not unlimited. Good luck

Your doctor should actually give you a list of things you can have. If you didn't get a list, ask for one. I say that because all docs are different and have different guidelines. I can tell you what I was allowed to have, but your diet may be different. I could have broth, cream soups, yogurt, sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles, protein shakes, and stuff like Crystal Lite.

My Doc has his patients follow a plan on 2 shakes each day plus one light meal each day for the two weeks before. Then two days before only liquids. Two days before is any type of liquid and 1 day before is only clear liquid and nothing with red or pruple dye. So 2 days before Icould have cream soups, yogurt however one day before it was water, popsicles, chicken broth and thats about it.....no popsicles with red or purple dye.
Hope that helps

Carnation Instant Breakfast for 10 days!
I met with my surgeon today, and he said to ignore all the hype about all the different types of proteins and shakes and all of that before surgery. The healthiest, cheapest method, one he uses with all of his patients and he leads a Bariatric Center for Excellence, is plain old Carnation Instant Breakfast. Five to six glasses a day with skim milk is all you need.
Well, it all sounds good, in theory, right! I start it on 12/1/09 and will find out.
Good luck with your diet and your surgery!!

If you're going to use Carnation Instant Breakfast, make sure you get the no sugar added ones. They still have some sugar, just not as much as the regular.
I don't think they are the best choice for a protein shake because they don't really have that much protein. If you put them in eight ounces skim milk, that's only about 13 grams of protein. And I think that's 150 calories per glass. Whereas you could use something like Chike, and one scoop in a glass of skim milk is 22 grams of protein and about 175 calories. So if you use Carnation, you'll end up getting a lot more calories in order to get the same amount of protein.

but, (and i ask this b/c my dr said the same thing about before surgery w/ carnation) since it is the before surgery diet to de-fattify your liver, could that be why they are saying not to invest in protein shakes yet?

I don't know why they would say that. I would ask your doc. Seriously. If they say things and we aren't sure why, we should always ask.
It may be that he means not to buy a bunch of something until after surgery because your tastes may change. Now, that makes sense. I would buy just enough to get through the pre-op diet, then have a bunch of different samples on hand for immediately after surgery so you can see what you like then.
