Pre Op smorgasbord?
Did any of you go on a smorgasbord before your surgery? My best friend suggested that we should go and eat all of my favorites the months before.

I wouldn't do it. You'll be able to eat pretty much anything after surgery, in moderation. No need to gorge before. A real best friend will be urging you to embrace a beautiful new jumpstart to your new life, not wallow in your old lifestyle. It's important that she understands that so she can support you post op

Well, I didn't do a whole months on end thing but I did gorge myself a few days before surgery.
My liver was inflamed and it cracked half way through my surgery.
I don't recommend doing anything that has the potential to cause such complications. Surgery is risky without adding to that risk with foolish behaviors pre-op.
Good luck!

I did eat some of my favorite foods in the weeks before surgery, but I didn't go overboard. I went to my favorite restaurants, though, and I ate some Ben and Jerry's ice cream (which I LOVED) shortly before starting my liquid diet. I know it's natural to do it, and doing a little of it won't hurt I don't guess, but you don't want to end up gaining weight right before your surgery. In fact, I know some people have actually had their surgeries cancelled because they gained weight from doing this right before surgery, and the surgeon wouldn't do the operation until they lost the weight again. And there is the liver thing, like Kel said.
The truth is, you will be able to eat most of that stuff after your surgery, you just won't be able to pig out on it anymore. Which is a good thing, not something to feel sad about. The best thing to do in the month before your surgery would be to start making some healthy changes to the way you eat, not gorging yourself on junk.

Kelly, you've hit the nail squarely on the head... there are some here that cannot eat as well as they'd hoped but for the most part, many of us can eat an extremely varied diet once the initial healing has happened.. just now it is less qty and more quality! And more "Normal!"

Plus I think she's considering the band so she SERIOUSLY doesn't even have to have a last binge, she'll still be able to eat ANYTHING.
Except for raw carrots. Turns me into the exorcist everytime.

Yeah, I was assuming she was wanting the band since she posted this in the pre-op lap band section. Now, I can't eat Ben and Jerry's anymore, and I do miss it sometimes, but not that much. I started making my own sugar free ice cream with protein powder in it. It's a nice treat.

I did go to my favorite restaurant the day before I started my pre-op diet. I ate potato soup and a salad from O'Charley's. Boy does that sound good about now.

Potato soup and a salad is not going overboard, though. And you'll be able to eat that again. You might have to wait a couple months on the salad, I wasn't allowed salad until about three months post-op. Boy did I crave it, too. Now, I did eat some potato soup a couple times since my surgery, and the first time it went down fine, but the second time I dumped on it. I think it might have been the fat, but I don't know why it didn't bother me the first time I ate it. Now I'm scared to try it again.
