Hi Sarah

Firstly - welcome aboard.

I had RNY with Dr D so it may be a little different - just ring direct healthcare and double check but basically I didn't have to follow any specific pre-op diet -I could eat anything I wanted right up until midnight before the surgery - in fact my last meal was full on Thai Banquet!

Good luck with the op - Dr D is fabulous and will look after you well.

xxx

This is the diet I received from my doctor this morning. I hope this helps!!

10 days prier to surgery.
These liquids can be taken in any amount since they do not contain sugar:
sugar free beverages such as crystal light, wylers light, sugar free kool aid, or sugar free tang, diet snapple, diet sodas, fruit 20, propel, coffee or tea with sugar substitute or water.
broth soups all varieties
sugar free popsicles

consume these liquids in moderation, they contain larger amounts of sugar
unsweetened fruit juices, gatorades, or powerade, limit to 2 cups or less each day.
regular jello, popsicles or no sugar added fudgesicles- limit to 3 or less servings each day
1 cup of milk, light yogurt, cottage cheese, limit to 3 or less servings per day
atkins shakes or carb solution shakes limit to 1 or 2 servings per day

I hope this helps a little!!

I didn't have any preop diet for the band. My advice is just to not eat anything really heavy 3 days before and you'll be fine..

I am having the band in 2 weeks too but not with Dr. D. My Dr told me to have 4 protein shakes per day. I can also have salads with fat free dressing.

I start my diet tomorrow morning. Good luck with the diet and your surgery. Keep us up to speed on your progress. See you on the losers bench.

Default what to eat with a band

Well, first of all, I would hope your doc is giving you a detailed list and instructions on how/when/what to eat. I know that was the case for me.

Here's what my doc suggested:

10 days before surgery - 5 or 6 slimfast drinks a day (or other protein drinks). Broth, crystal light and water are also okay. The goal was to rest the tummy and defat the liver before surgery to minimize complications.

Surgery time - IV's baby! 24 hours, plus some water, and then my first liquid meal before leaving the hospital (no eating till they'd done a barium swallow to ensure it was all looking good.

8 days - clear liquids only (broth, clear juice, jello) 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup at a time, max.

8 days- full liquids (smooth yogurt, sugar-free instant breakfast, milk, cream soups). 1/4 to 1/2 cup at a time, 1 c milk, 3 times a day as snacks

2 weeks - purees (anything you can puree smooth) Focus was to get 56 grams of protein a day, minimal sugar, 1/4 to 1/2 cup each meal, 1 cup milk for snacks, 3 times a day

1 week - mushies (same portion size, same milk snack).

after that, I started easing regular food, VERY well-chewed, same portion sizes, same milk snacks. In general, lean, dense protein first, a little veg to fill in the difference, and milk for snacks.

Doing this I lost 3-4 lbs a week for the first 6 months. Once I got more relaxed and started eating off-plan it all slowed down. BUT, I know if I go strictly back to this, the rest will come off.

Hope that helps!

I guess the recommendation from surgeon to surgeon can vary A LOT. For mine, I will have no specific pre-op or post-op diet (as in liquid diet or mushies, etc.). They just want me to start practicing eating like I have lapband surgery already (chewing food well, eating protein first, start cutting way back on any drinks that have calories, etc.).
