I would rather my surgeon used a different method than another surgeon.. if it was one he was more comfortable with. There are many cures/medicines/treatments that vary doctor by doctor for many things. I dont think this is different. I bet you will even find that in the way our hairdressers cut our hair... or our checkout people at the grocery store do it differently. Extreme examples yes.. I know surgery is more important than checking out at Walmart... but it really doesnt bother me that my surgeon may do it differently than yours.. Different teaching methods. Different time periods learning the procedure. New advances in nurtition for WLS that some arent "up" on. I figure, once my surgeon provides me with the tool.. it will be MY job to figure out how to use it. THe nutritionist will give me guidelines.. and that information combined with the information I have gained here and elsewhere, will give me the power to make informed, healthy decisions that work for ME... just like you will figure out what works for YOU..
If everyone did it the same.. no-one would ever learn how to do it better..

You do what works for you. There are basic guidelines, which are really quite vague. Expeierence and practice makes a difference. The type of WLS makes a difference. In the end, you are what makes the greatest difference in your success with WLS, no matter the type. I loosely followed my surgeon's guidelines. He was fine that I went outside the box for me...it has worked for me.

I believe in the all mighty Dr Charles Callery. I interviewed 4 surgoens before I found him, so many had the weirdest protocols. From dietary drink supplements that had to be bought before scheduling surgery WHICH could only be sold by their practice to ensure you were taking the products they recommended... wtf?! Also to joing their gym, and signing up with their trainer...
to never eating red meat, corn or coconut again..... wtf?
I met so many odd balls, hear so many stories, read on the internet, did research for 5 years, met Carnie Wilson when I finally stumbled on Dr Callery, whose name I got from a girl I met in a bar! I didnt even know her.
The cool thing about Dr Callery, besides hosting this site is, if go to the main page, thinnertimes.com he has dietary recommendations, post op and pre op recommendations, protein suplement recommendations, etc......
Ultimately, you just have to go with your gut to decide whats right for you.

Hi Jennifer,
I just noticed that you have a friend who had gbs in MD. Was it recently? Was it RNY? Do you have any idea who her surgeon was?
I'm in the early stages of the journey and am in MD and was just curious.
Thanks!!

I asked that
I asked my surgeon why he didn't require a liquid diet before surgery and he said that no food before midnight pretty much takes care of cleaning out what he's working on. I suspect that because he is chief of trauma surgery - especially abdominal cases - most of his patients are not "cleaned out" before he starts so his bariatric patients look pretty good.
As to drains, he said they are only really necessary if there is a problem, everyone hates them and because he's had so few problems, he just doesn't use them. Says there are other ways to deal with those problems if they come up.
They all do what makes them comfortable. That is a good thing. we want happy people cutting us open.

Jennifer, where in Dallas did your sister have her surgery? I actually work in Dallas, and had my surgery here as well. Who was her surgeon? There aren't many people from this area on this board, so when I hear dallas, my ears perk up.
