If i had a bumpersticker that said "Just say YES to epidural!" i would totally put it on my car lol.
Back when i was pregnant with my first child everyone asked me "Oh are you going to go natural?" My answer ..... "HAHAHAHA ... No." Then again im a HUGE wuss. I had an epidural with both kids and am thrilled to peices i did. I would so much rather remember their births w/ happy memories than trying to block out the memories of immense pain. I dont think they hurt at all! My first was really really mild discomfort for a moment and the second just tingled for a second and then was fine. My poor husband had the hardest time with them. He almost passed out with the first one lol ... my nurse that was holding me had to call in another nurse to get him to a chair. She said he was so grey was starting to look green.
If i had the option for epidural with this .... Yeah i think i would have taken it. But of course its up to you. Since youre having open i personally would DEFINITLY take it. Staying in a hospital for a week is bad enough. If i wasnt atleast moderatly comfortable id go crazy. The morphine was horrible .. Shot - out for an hour - awake and in pain for an hour - Shot - out for an hour - awake and in pain for an hour ... rinse repeat.
Good Luck with whatever you chose hon. Im sure it will go well for you.

I have 3 words for you: versaid, epidural, MORPHINE. A fabulous combo I would do again in a heartbeat!!! I had my gbs open. They gave ne versaid on the table, and I sat there as the doc put the epi in and just talked to my wonderful nurse. I have no idea what we talked about, but think I may have stopped talking mid-sentence...the next thing I remember - I woke up in recovery and someone put a lovely little pump in my hand that was my friend for the week

The way they explained how mine will be, is YES they will knock me out (there's no way I would want to be awake through this one) and they will also give me an epidural. The epidural will only numb the tummy area, still allowing you to walk that day. This is to help ease the pain after surgery.

That sounds just like what I would be getting - I'll be able to walk around and everything, just will be numb in the surgery area.

My hesitation is that most people who had epidurals for childbirth had some back pain afterwards or they didn't work quite right. But I think I fear narcotics more...

Again, my childbirth experience was pretty great, there was pain, but I really had no big problem dealing with it, but then again, I knew I was getting a baby in the end. This is just pain without stopping...

Also - I'll be awake for the epi insertion - they told me so.

I'll ask about that other drug though - that could help make my decision.

Thanks everyone!!
Gina

Smile epidural...

What are you having done that an epidural is an option? I am very new to this so if my ignorance is blatant, sorry. Anywho, it appears you have already had a bariatric procedure and have lost a significant amount of weight. Are you looking at revision of left over skin/tummy tuck/abdominal wall muscle tightening? If an epidural was an option I would do it-in a heart beat- I've had three attempts with one success(one child- it took the guy three tries to get it right. I guess the third time is the charm, huh?????) I had no lasting problems what so ever. The most important thing to me was that I was conscious; didn't even go under for the old wisdom teeth removal....OOOPs I think Im answering/commenting on a situation that could be one or two years old........

The epidural is awesome! I was going to do a natural child birth and my best friend who has two kids was in the room. She told them to give me the epidural. It worked awesome.I do not have any back pain now.If you are in enough pain you wont even notice the needle plus its behind you...

Thumbs up great loss.....

Wow, you have done great on your pre-op diet....I just got my packet sent in with my height, weight, 20 page medical history, etc. Whoa....a lot of stuff. Anyway, I have to have a sleep study test to determine whether or not I have apnea and a GI scope to look at the esophogus and stomach. Boy, this sounds like to much fun. Oh, and a current pap smear..... But, I just remember to keep my eye on the prize, violet.

Guys, she has already had her surgery. This thread is over 2 years old.

How did it wind up working for you, Gina?

Default Yea -old thread alright

That was a discussion about having and epidural for post-op pain. And yes, I had it and it worked and was wonderful. After the wheeled me into the or, I sat up on the table and bent over, as curvey as possible, and they did the epi. I hated it. It sucked, I hope never to do it again, but boy was my post op easy. I mean, they kept saying, "On a scale of 1 - 10, what is your pain like" and i was like - Zero baby - I have NOOO pain at all. And I had natural childbirth twice to avoid the epidural - I mean, my phobia was that bed.

Anyway - this thred was from May 2005, but I'd do the same thing again. And getting a epidural while you are not having contractions has got to be easier than they are for labor. And it is much higher up. Sort of half way up your back. I highly recommend it.
