Question 2 Week Pre-Op Diet

Hello All,

I've been reading and I see that the process for surgery and approval is different than what I have experienced so far.

Did you guys have to do a pre-op 1000 calorie liquid diet for 2 weeks?

Furthermore, as I mentioned before, I had my appointment with the surgeon, he scheduled the surgery date (October 28th) and I have an appointment for my Pre-Admission Testing tomorrow. All of this took place and the whole time I'm asking, "WHAT ABOUT THE INSURANCE??????".

Everytime I asked that question, they would tell me, "we will take care of it".
I still don't know today if I'm approved. Meanwhile, I've seen the Psyc, the nutritionist and started this 2 week liquid diet thing which is about to kill me , and I know nothing. Seems a little backwards to me. Only in New York

I've been telling myself that they are so experienced they've got it all under control. I guess my problem is I don't have control and I'm not used to that at all.

If you did have to do the liquid diet thing, how did you make it through?? If not......SOMEBODY HEEEELLLLLLPPPP!!! I called the nutritionist today and told her she was trying to kill me!! LOL

YOU GUYS ARE GREAT, THANKS FOR LISTENING!!

Dr Callery is more lenient about things. He recommends to lose some weight, but it's not mandatory. He stresses to at least not gain more weight between the pre-op appt and the surgery date. For most of us, it's only a week apart. Even after, it's not mandatory to stick with a particular diet, because diets don't work! He has a eating guideline and allows you to progress depending on your own recovery time. His office stress more about how you rather than just what you eat. I have talked to others who have to go on a 2 month restricted diet before surgery and mandate a 5% weight loss. Whatever you do, just do it. It's better to jump through whatever hoops you need to to get the surgery done. Once it's done, you can regain some control over you eating habits. Down the road, you'll look back and realize it was all worth the effort.

Default 2 week diet

I know that I have a really hard time on "liquid diets" I am glad that Dr. Callery doesnt do this. I know he wants you to lose weight before surgery.
I know with my support system(my beautiful wife Irela) it will be easier to lose before surgery than ever before.

Default Mary,

That does seem a bit backwards, but hey, if they've got it taken care of, they just eliminated an other waiting game. Sorry to hear about the liquid diet thing I have heard of other doctors doing something simular prior to surgery. Like Marie said, just do it, it's only 2 weeks. Be happy that it's not the 6 month one!

None the less, Congratulations on your surgery date! You'll be in my thoughts and prayers for a safe and speedy recovery!

Wink Just do it

We dont have to do it, sorry to hear that you have to... some surgeons here in SD do it too... some make you drink protein shakes exclusively following surgery too... and you can only buy what the sell at their office by the case not the can!! So if all you have to do is 2 weeks, you are pretty fortunate! Good luck Miss Thang!

Thumbs up Seek And Ye Shall Find!!!

Okay,

So today I had my Pre-Admission Testing done. Woo Hoo!!! I asked the guy who was poking me with the needle , why they did everything before knowing whether or not the insurance company is going to approve the procedure. He informed me that they do things that way so by the time the insurance is approved, we can just go for surgery, nothing else to do. I thought that was cool.

Then, I had my last appointment with the nutritionist, I told her we had to make a deal. I asked her if this diet was about liquid or about keeping within the 800-1000 calorie range. She told me the 800-1000 calorie thing (for the shrinking of the liver) and I told her I would be much better doing that with food than liquid. So she slid me a piece of paper across the table with an offer (a small list of what I should eat), and I slid her back a piece of paper with a counter offer ( a small list of what I would eat) and we came to a happy medium.

I don't have a problem being on a strict diet, it's just the liquid thing. I know I have to do clear fluids after surgery, but I'm sure I won't want much more than that.

Once again, you guys have been great. Thank you for the support and sharing.

Default Mary,

That's great news! When do you get a surgery date then?

Very funny about the deal you got going with the nutritionist. LOL

Smile New Date

My date now is actually October 29, 2004. Somebody over there made a boo boo and once again, I'm just finding out today. I checked, double checked and triple checked to make sure it is 10/29/04. I would hate to show up on Friday and they look at me like "girl you should've been here yesterday". LoL

I'm laughing now, but it wouldn't be funny at all

It's funny what games the brain plays.....ever since the nutritionist agreed that I could have food, I haven't even thought about eating. That is something else. Oh well, no turning back now....FORWARD, MARCH!

No, I didn't go on a 2 wk diet before surgery. If I could have stuck to a diet, I wouldn't have needed this surgery! It was all that I could do to keep from bingeing for 48hrs before surgery!!!!!

Default No pre-op diet.

Hi Mary,
I agree with Suzanne. I wouldn't have needed the surgery if I could stay on a diet. I went through years of diet programs and diet pills and my body couldn't handle the starvation modes anymore. I was lucky enough if I could have a day without sugar and fattening foods. This is one of the many reasons why I love Dr. Callery's program.
