Default Blood clots

I have some questions about after surgery does anyone know ifyou can fly about a week after surgery? I am a bit concerned and my sister in law just put the fear of God in me telling me her mom knows someone who died of a blood clot after surgery. I thought I hear something a long time ago about blood clots and flying but I don't think it was in regards to WLS but just flying or something like that. It's an hour and a half from San Diego to Sacramento, i heard you need to get up and stretch and walk about every 45 minutes or so. Now how does that work when you are sleeping and is this for the rest of your life (worrying about getting a blood clot )? Please let me know anything you know so I will be better prepared. Thanks

Thumbs up Clots

They put these nice leg warmers that do massage on your legs while you are in the bed. Feels great!!

Blood clots are a risk with any procedure due to the prolonged bed rest and immobility. This is the same case for LENGTHY plane rides. Just remember to get the circulation moving when your able.

I actually had a blood clot in my brachial vein 2 years. It was only a coincidence this happed 2 days after I returned from a wild trip to Mexico. My blood doc said there is no way a 2 or 3 hour flight could have caused the DVT. This cause is still unknown. I am prone to blood clots now, as far as they know, and I have been cleared for surgery.

I hope my rambling has helped ease your nerves darlin! Let me know if you need anything else.

Take Care,
Amanda

Default I was told no long trips

I just had my education sessions last week and they said no long plane or car trips for 4 weeks due to the blood clot issue. That being said, people go home from many hours away after three days in the hospital, they just have to pull over every 30 minutes or so and walk around.

The old stand by statement: "Ask your doctor" to be sure.

Good luck!

Thanks guys for all the great info. I appreciate it much. I was asking beacuse my husband works a lot and he is usually not home till very late at night (10pm) So he won't be able to help me so I have decided to go to Sacramento and stay with my mom for the recovery time. It works out great beacuse my sister is due to have my nephew around that time so I hope he comes while I am there. I would take a 1 1/2 hour flight up there (a week after surgery) I could get up and stretch and walk around making sure I don't clot. Once again if you have any more info. that I should know please post. Thank you alll again.

Tiffany - are you having it lap or open? I had mine open and was coming home after a week (4 days, really) and felt like crap that first week home. Be careful with the flying and ask your doctor first.

Regarding the clotting: with me and many people I know locally, they are given Heparin in the hospital which is a shot in the belly twice daily to prevent clotting. Upon release from the hospital they prescribed Lovonox which is the same thing made for use in the home and is a self injectable. My coaches shot me up twice daily to prevent the clotting...Nonetheless, always talk to your doc

I am really not sure witch one my Dr. is going to do yet. What is the diffrence and witch one should I ask for? You mean I will have to shoot myself in the stomache every day with a needle? I don't think I can do that.

The needle isn't so bad - I think I was told it was 26 guage which is tiny - sometimes I didn't even feel it at all. Check with your doc regarding his/her preferred methoods, though...
