Default pre op appointment!!

Today I went for my pre op appointment. I was taken back by the resident doctor who "assisted" with my primary surgeon. I feel comfortable with my surgeon how ever my comfort level with the resident was less than desireable. The resident chided me for looking at my file. Hello, It is my right to see my medical and treatment file. Secondly he was from middle eastern descent. I have no preconcieved prejudices againist him based on his ethnic origin, however he spoke primarily to my "support person" (a male) who came with me rather than to me the patient. I understand this is a cultureal difference however if you are going to practice in the us you need to learn about our culture. Here its okay to talk to women and we are even considered equals!!!! He also mildly berated me for gaining 10 lbs since my last visit, and was not pleased with my explanation (which he expected from my support person, not I and told my support person not to let me gain more weight.)

I attempted to point out that I was back at my "starting weight" and it could be due to a scale differencial or more documentation to loose/gain syndrome so many of us go though. That obviously wasn't good enough.

When my surgeon came in and asked me about it I explained again and it made perfect sense to him that I have not gained over what I started at.

He then sent the resident back in to go over paperwork with me (he tried to pawn it off on a nurse but was shut down There fore he did not explain it to me just handed me my papers!!!!

Its frustrating but at least I am cleared for surgery!!!! I just needed to vent a bit. I realize a lot of what I experienced today is just a cultureal differencial.

Sometimes it is very difficult to deal with doctors. Sorry you had a rough time dealing with this. Wish you the best.

well, just my thought, but you should have told your doc how he made you feel or better yet tell him. It is the only way he is going to learn as an intern.

Always report when you feel you weren't treated like you should have by any healthcare professional. When a healthcare professional is using the wrong patient care tatics then they begin to form habits of treating other patients that way and that is not right. I am sure his culture plays a big role in the way you were treated but if he went to medical school here trust me he was not trained like that. Well anywho Congrats is in order you will be on the losing side soon and that is something to be truley happy about.

He needs a kick in the ass. If any of my residents acted like that I'd be on the horn to their boss STAT! No one would dare talk to my patients like that. Stick up for yourself hon. TATTLE ON HIM. lol

Well, I think the best way to handle it is to talk to my doctor about it post op. I plan to phrase it positively as a "growing opportunity" for the resident and point out that I do realize cultural differences but he needs to 'get over it' if he is going to practice here. Thanks for the advice and reading my vent!
