Most definitely! I am a person who rarely goes to the Dr and the money spent on insurance up till now has been all in their pockets. Well I am certainly going to be getting my moneys worth with the surgery!!

I strongly suggest everyone check with their insurance company frequently as their requirements seem to change. I found out today, after over three months of delays, that my HMO would only cover certain surgeons and hospitals "Designated Bariatric Centers" - and that list did not include the baratric surgeon with whom I had an initial consultation and attended two seminars. So I am back to square one. Neither my Primary Care Physician, nor the Medical Group to whom he belongs - nor the Bariatric Surgeon I had consulted seemed to know this - so I have wasted 3 months, a lot of energy and time, and had a lot of tests.
I have never encountered such bureaucracy in my life as getting approval for GBP and I have 4 co-morbidities and a BMI of 36.
I have lost faith in much of the medical establishment in this area.

I think the bigger the company the easier it is too.. mostly, I know that we are self insured, but go through BCBS. I know we have like 16k employees in 15 or 16 countries... and we pay all our own bills. It LOOKS like BCBS is.. but somehow.. we pay them..
I heard that insurance companies dont like to do the surgery, because, the average person changes insurance companies every 3 years. They figure its going to take about 15 to see the surgery pay off... so they dont reap the benefit.. (however, they get new people every 3 years too... so it in actuality would be a wash.. they dont see it that way).. BUT.. with bigger companies the turnover is much less.. (usually).. and the benefit is proven.
There.. thats just what I heard .. dont remember where.. but.. it made sense at the time. (It may have been my doc that told me that)

Congrats on your good news Christy! I also have BCBS but am soooo nervous that I'm not going to be approved when it's all said and done.
My BMI is over 40 and I've started the supervised weight loss and testing but the blasted insurance company won't come right out and say what they require for approval. So, my surgeon wants me to get all of the tests done and be under their supervision for weight loss for 3 months and then they're going to file for me. That will be in June and then fingers crossed.
Honestly, you'd think that this would save these companies money in the long run and they'd pay for it! Grrrr...
