Theoretically they should get better provided you don't have fibroids or something like that causing the problem. Fat actually converts substances to estrogen which increases in obesity. Your estrogen levels will go down which should decrease the amount of monthly build up in your uterus. That being said, women report changes in their periods all over the board. Some worse, some better. Me personally, I had very heavy periods before surgery and I just finished my first cycle since surgery. I had 6 days of spotting and 1 1/2 days of bleeding. Overall better.

I have seen previous posts that talk about this topic. Maybe you can do a search for them to see what others have said. For me, they were actually worse; more cramps and the cycle lasted longer. My monthly used to last 3 days and no cramps. Now they last about 5 and are heavy and I have cramps all 5 days. Sorry to discourage you, but this has been my experience.

Surgery and Your Period
My periods have been all over the place. Of course, I'm pretty sure I'm perimenopausal now, so my experience probably isn't a good example for you. I've had periods close together, spotting, no period for six months, lots of clotting...you name it!
I would have to say that most of the post-op women on this forum report their periods are a little more troublesome, probably due to the release of estrogen during weight loss. However, the positive results we see from surgery are worth way more than yucky periods.

I have had two since the surgery and mine are about the same, 3 days of medium flow then one of spotting. I can't complain, and I hope they don't change that much.

Kristy mines have always been real light so I have never had any problems with mins, not even after surgery until about a month ago. I haven't put my self back on birth control yet but that is my next move because being on BC really helped with any cramping I experienced. Maybe right after your surgery you can make arragement to have them on-hand so you can take before the big "P" day.

Kristy:
Like Dara, I'm in perimenopause myself (my PCP confirmed last year). Kelly (in Dr. Callery's office) told me that after surgery, I may be completely done with periods, or, I may get into full-blown monthly periods again (don't like the sound of that).
I guess the situ is that they're kinda replumbing us a bit, and that changes things, including hormones. So, it's really a crapshoot, unfortunately.
2 years ago, I lost 130 lbs on Weight Watchers (put a great deal of it back on, dammit!) Anyway, that's when the perimenopause started (could be timing, could be the weight loss - who knows?) Also, that's when they found out that I had thyroid nodules and a goiter (sounds like something someone's maiden aunt would have - I can just hear my mother...."Carolyn, at Thanksgiving dinner, don't stare at Aunt Esther's goiter!")
Long story short (okay, not so short) - you never know how it's going to affect you. Everyone is completely different with hormones, etc. Your age is a factor (you're young still!)

haha a total dinner table response. yeah im still young.. i guess ill see how it goes once im there. i was on birth control pills a long time ago and had GREAT periods, but i used to get extremely bad migranes every month. I took myself off them, no more migranes. Just horrible periods. I want to go back on BC but im scared of side effects. and the whole blood clot warning... i dont know! scary things... what do u think?

Remember, right after surgery, your hormones are all wacky. So, it may take a while to see how their going to be long-term. I hadn't had a period in a year and then I had two since surgery. But, now it looks like I'm really done! Yeah!

Kristy...
Before surgery I was VERY VERY VERY irregular, sometimes skipping 2-3 months. My periods were VERY heavy and VERY crampy for the entire cycle, which was like 6-7 days. Since surgery my periods have become VERY regular and the cramps are usually light and seem to appear the day before I start and the next day. Also, my cycle isn't as long as before. 3-5 days now. But still a pretty heavy flow. Oh well...what can I do but deal with it? NOT A DARN THING!
