Question Gallbladder Question

My gallbladder ultra sound results came back and said I have a small stone. Does that mean I will need to have gallbladder removed during surgery, or have to take more meds after or what?

Default Gallbladder

My doctor takes the gallbladders out every time. They found a gall stone the size of the Hope Diamond and an Ovarian Cyst the size of a melon in me, and I didn't know either one was there. Big Surprise! I got three surgeries in one!
Your doctor will have to tell you his theory on gallbladders. You can live without it. It just means your diet in the future is going to be more fat free, so I understand.

Youzaaa - a gallstone the size of a melon! It's amazing how those suckers grow, and you don't even know.

I didn't know I had gallstones until I had the required ultrasound for the surgery - otherwise, I wouldn't have known (until it flared up).

My doctor is going to take out the gallbladder at the same time as the surgery....they didn't want me to have the gallbladder operation first because I'd need to wait 6 months after that surgery for the WLS. It's pretty standard to have the gallbladder removed at the same time. I'd like them to take everything at the one time (and if they could give me a fresh coat of paint or liquid stucco in there, great!)

Unhappy Gallstones

Christina:

It's true--there's no hard and fast rule. I had a 3cm stone discovered during my gallbladder ultrasound, and Dr. Callery still gave me the option of keeping my gallbladder. I opted to have it removed during my open procedure.

My opinion is that if you already have a stone, you may have attacks in the future that necessitate removal. If I were you, I'd have it removed during surgery. However, it's your surgeon's call and your call, not mine! Good luck to you.

This was one of the deciding factors in me deciding to switch to the open procedure. With my luck, I would be the one to develop stones after surgery and have to go back for another surgery. My doc will take the gallbladder lap if he sees a problem (probelms can develop later), but he always takes it open because of the incision size....

I had my gall bladder taken out about four years ago so I don't have to worry about it for this surgery.

I had a couple of stones and what I can tell you is that when those babies start to pass, you think you are going to die! As a matter of fact, I was wishing I WOULD die just to get out of the pain. Passing gallstones is NOT for sissies!

Since getting it out, I've noticed that some highly fat foods make me have some "interesting" digestive problems, but nothing that isn't bareable.

I would tell your doc that you want that thing outta there! Save yourself future grief! Trust me!! I'd rather have another baby than go through that again~

IF you have the option to have your gallbladder out with gastric bypass, I would suggest it. I had great pain with my gallbladder and really glad I had it out before surgery. I was pregnant when the symptoms first started so they couldn't operate. I miscarried, and had it out 2 weeks later. It was packed FULL of stones. The wait list was very long here for WLS, so I opted to have the gallbladder out first.

Check with your doctor as see if they can do them at the same time.

Have them take the lil booger out while they are in there! I had to have mine out after wls. Painful, those gall bladder attacks! I wish they would have had time to get mine out during my wls, but I had to have a fatty tumor removed from my intestine instead.

Uhhhhh...from what I've read, a 5cm stone is NOT small! Some surgeons remove the gallbladder if it contains a stone 3cm or larger, even if there are no symptoms present or a history of attacks.
