Default 6 Month Medically Supervised Diet

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anybody could give me more information on the "Medically Supervised" Diet for XX amount of months.

Like for example...what if you lose weight, do they MAKE you not go any farther towards WLS? Do they still let you do it? I am so confused.

I just really hope for this surgery. I think I could become a new me. But there is no way a 365lbs 16 year old will EVER get down to healthy weight through a diet. Well maybe eventually....but it would take like....years!

Default Don't Panic

When I started this whole procedure I had a meeting with the surgeon on March 28 (2005) and he told me how much he wanted me to lose, and then referred me to an endocronologist for diet help.

The endocronologist gave me lot's of great info and suggestions as to what to eat, and how many pounds per week I would lose with either a 1400 or 1800 calorie diet. I tried to stay with the 1400 but had the 1800 for my bad days. Follow up visits confirmed my weight loss, and how I was doing physically and emotionally.

The regimented start was to see if I had the persistence to follow thru on my own and lose, or fail. They didn't want me to fail, and it was reassuring to have someone care.

Periodic visits with the surgeon kept me focused, and challenged. The last 5 weeks the surgeon stepped up the pace, and put me on all liquid diet for the last 3 weeks.

The surgery is not the final answer, it's only a tool, and we have time before to make serious lifestyle changes. If you don't have it down pat by nine months post surgery your chance of failing will be immense.

It took me from March 18, 2005 until January 16, 2006 to prepare. I lost 85 pounds in preparation for the surgery, and as of today in the last 20 days have lost another 20 pounds.

Was it easy--NO!! Was it worth it--YES!! Do I want to succeed--I'VE NEVER WANTED ANYTHING THIS BAD IN 51 YEARS!!

Don't give up on yourself, you can do it, but you have to do it for yourself. Don't do it for your parents, or your friends, or for anybody else. The most important phrase I learned is "I CHOOSE NOT TO EAT THAT, IT'S NOT THAT I CAN'T EAT THAT".

Sit down and make a list of pro's and con's of what life will be like if you don't do something. I will bet your list of pro's will be greater. I was heavy all my life including highschool, and I know the heartbreak of not being included, or able to participate.

Just recently there was a show on about a high school student your age who had the surgery, and he looked fantastic after a years time (Discovery or Health Channel). He struggled too. but he made it work.

The 6 months thing is just proof that you tried it all and not just an off the cuff idea to rush out and get surgery. It's impossible for you to lose enoguh weight in 6 months to get you out of the mrobidly obese range and criteria. In some cases, when you're in the 35-40 BMI range, the weight loss may prevent from qualifying for surgery.

I gained weight during my 6 months supervised diet attempt.

Hi there. This is my first post, but I thought I'd just jump in here.

I had to do a 6 month diet for my medical group. I did WW and lost about 17 pounds over the 6 months. This didn't disqualify me at all. As someone else said, they want to make sure I could stick to something because as you know after surgery you HAVE to stick to a better eating plan. The other poster (sorry, I don't know names yet) also mentioned it as a way to make sure that you have tried other diets. You might not be able to get to a healthy weight without surgery, but there are others who can, who somehow just get it in their mind that the surgery is somehow the "easy way" (of course we all know better) and they are just going to skip everything and try for that.

When I was on WW I followed the program to the letter for the first 4 months and lost 17 pounds in that time. At the same time I was on the WW message boards and there were people on there who had been on the plan for 3 months and had lost 50 pounds. I wish I'd had that kind of success. So it does work for some people, and the doctor/insurance probably just wants to make sure patients have tried other options and that surgery really is the answer for them. Good luck.

Just a note here--I also had to go on a 6 month supervised diet-guess how much I lost? Absolutly nothing. Losing weight wasn't a criteria for my surgeon. So, first of all, I would find a surgeon who is covered under your insurance and-and I think this will be the harder part--find one who is willing to do it on someone your age. Then when you go to your first appointment-the surgeon will tell you what requirements he has.

Well it was just a low calorie diet.. but i think it was from the American Diabetic Association Diet. I'm not diabetic just seemed like a good supervised diet, honestly its kind of a joke. I only lost 2 pounds. I guess just something to shut the insurance company up about. Anyways good luck hun!
