Ack, I would say DON'T go to a psych who has never done an eval before. Call the surgeon's office and see if there is someone that they recommend, or at the very least, go see a therapist that specializes in treating eating disorders or bariatric patients.

), usually it's best to see a psychologist, not a psychiatrist. A psychologist will be able to speak more intelligently about your state of mind, which is what the insurance/docs care about, rather than your mental physiology (a psychiatrist's area of expertise).
I got lucky: I had a psych consult with a social worker that is a bariatric surgery advocate and specifically works with my surgeon's office, a private therapist that specializes in eating disorders, AND a psychiatrist who handles my meds (and all three wrote glowing recommendations for me to get surgery).
