Pre Op liquid Diet
My Doc suggested that I do a liquid diet for a period of 2 weeks prior to surgery. She stated it has positive effects on the liver. Anyone do this? What does the diet entail? I realize it will be difficult but anything to help out my body prior to a major surgical event. I have read some of you did this, what types of things did you do, did you add in colon cleansing as well? Thanks - less than 3 weeks!
Mike

I'll be looking forward to the answers. Any hints, tips, etc...to keep us on the straight and narrow!!!

Sorry...
I was told to do it too and wasn't looking forward to it. I had actually lost some weight prior to surgery but quit smoking. When I went in for pre-op, my doctor smiled and said he could tell i had quit smoking - i hadn't said a thing - he said, "You've gained 7 pounds." And we just howled. i told him i was putting alot in my mouth but would try my best and did the liquids (600 calories a day!) for the three days prior to my surgery. I am four days out and still doing clear liquids.
The pre-op liquids are for shrinking your liver quickly so that it won't be in the way of the surgeons and a wuick weight loss to loosen up the abdominal area prior to surgery. No cleansing or enema - your body just does that on its own. Hope this helps and good louck in the coming weeks!

At least the doctor had a sense of humor about it. Congrats on making it through the surgery...best of luck over the next few weeks. I'm not looking forward to the liquid diet, but if it makes the surgery that much safer, I'll do it!

Thanks for the info
Cindy
My dr. stated it was optional, but preferred her patients did it. She did not really give reasons why, but I remember something about shrinking the liver. I figure if I am going to do this, why not start early, I don't have an issue with protein shake - at least not yet - so it will be tough but we can both do it. When is your surgery date Cindy? Mine is 2/13 at St. Marys in Richmond. Good luck and Michelle thaks for the info.

I am on a liquid diet effective 1/18/06 until surgery with will hopefully be 3/7 if I can loose the 30 pounds my doc wants me to loose - if not it will be until 3/17. I am doing Optifast (aka Optifamine) until surgery. It is 800 calories a day and all of the RDA's requirements for vitamins and minerals.
He said that it reduces the fattiness of the liver, thus making it a safer operation. He also said that losing the fat in the pannus region (the fatty area just below my breasts and down to the pubic line) makes for easer slicing through it, and he said that with this phase I would make that area less dense, and easier for losing after surgery...

In order to do the RNY the surgeon has to work under your liver so he has to flip it up. My surgeon says that 2 weeks on high protein only will shrink your liver by about 1/3 in size and weight. At least that is how it is done with laproscopy.

Liquid diet
Hi Mike,
I've been on a liquid diet for the last few weeks.
My Dr told me to go out and get several brands of shakes so that I wouldn't get tired of anyone of them. Some are better than the others. I spoke with him as I just can't do the liquid thing all alone, he said to toss in a few protien bars, just as long as my caloric intake is 1000 or less.
So I have a shake & bar in the morning, shake & bar in the afternoon, and chicken salad or fish. Boy did that help. So far I have lost 16lbs. He wanted me down to approx 300lbs if I could get there.
So far, so good..Looks like I get the LAP surgery instead of the Open!
(Also, my personal trainer said the bars & chicken are helping me loose weight as it takes more energy to digest them than it does the shakes)
Good luck & happy loosing!!
Dave

Thanks Dave
Dave I have been using protein shakes for years, as I lift weight fairly seriously. I have across a lot of good and bad ones. The one I really like is SANN Infusion, not only does it give you 47 grams of protein but 8 grams of fiber, 6 grams of healthy EFA and they actually taste good too, especially in skim milk. They offer choco peanutbutter, wildberry yogart-my fav, vanilla cinnamon and one other I cannot think of off the top of my head. Thanks for the info and good luck. You may want to try SANN, the most tolerable shakes out there.
Mike
