Lap-Band is where the doc places a ring around a portion of the stomach. There is no cutting or rearranging of the intestines or stomach. It's done through 5-7 small incisions where they insert long instruments. The band is then filled with saline water to squeeze the stomach and cause a smaller space. This is adjusted every so often depending on your results. There is no dumping after eating...but if you eat too much, it can cause vomiting. There is conern about the band eroding into the stomach and the weightloss not as dramatic...it takes longer to lose weight. It is somewhat reversible and the procedure itself is shorter.

Wow - Great answer, Lea!
Hi Goldendc69,
I am going in for the lap band -it's taking forever to get everything squared away and get a surgery date though...
Good luck with yours!
Hugs,

Some negatvie information about the lap band, is that in sweden there is a study and 33% of the patients have serious complications with their band after 33 months. After that the figure only get higher.
In sweden many hospitals have abandoned the lap band due to all the complications and all the reoperations (to gastric bypass) they have to do.
Maybe not good news but i think it is an issue one should be aware of before doing the lap band.
The complications is mostly vomitting (some even during the nights), but also that the band is in the wrong place and might damage the stomach.

Sheesh!
And the US FDA (Food and Drug Aministration) only approved it in 2001.
Go figure!

I'm still glad I chose the RNY........I have enough trouble staying on task with the more restrictive option.....Lordy, Lordy. lol I am anxious to see how this surgery changes and what they find. It would be great to know there is a safer and effective option for some. Good luck to those of you trying it. Stick around, we are all together in it no matter what method we choose.

Welcome!! My advice is to go to your local library and find a book on it. That is what I did. It helps in addition to this forum (this forum has been the best thing since sliced bread). My aunt had the lab band 2 ½ years ago (that is what got me started on my weight lose surgery journey). She had some problems, but for the most part, she is fine. Good luck in what ever you do!!!!!
