Default When in doubt, spit it out

Okay, this was a little disturbing. I went to GBS support group and a few of the post ops were talking about cravings. Two of the ladies quietly revealed to each other that they had episodes where they just couldn't resist cheating. One of them said she wanted a burger and fries from McD's so bad that she took a break from work and flew right over.

When they saw I was listening and the look of shock on my face, they felt the need to explain... .

Apparently these two have been chewing on naughty stuff, only CHEWING...mind you. And then they spit out the offending thing before swallowing so as not to fill their pouches.

I'm pretty flabberghasted by this. Is this common practice?

Default Spit it out

All though I have never done what they do I have spit food out. Sometimes when I am eating something I start to get a sick feeling so I will spit it out. Other times is when I took a bite and was chewing but then realized that it was one bite to many I will spit it out. I think those women have a bit of a problem (just my thoughts).

Oh, definitely Jeanie...I think there's a problem, allright.

It just seems like purposely doing this would sabotage all of your hard efforts. I mean, I'm pre-op, so I don't really know...but it would seem that the pouch is supposed to be a tool to help you beat off these types of cravings. Not to mention how gross it is to be spitting out your food all the time...Blech!

On the other hand, how mmany carbs and fat are you going to get from just chewing and spitting? Maybe I'm being tooharsh to think this is just setting yourself up for disaster.

Default Admission of guilt...

Okay, okay... I'll admit to doing this... once... sort of.

We got heavy for various reasons, one of which, for me, was bad eating habits. Having GBS does not totally eliminate your DESIRE for certain foods at certain times. The cravings are still there. Our tool helps us deal with that, but there are times we still want something really bad for us.

My son had a big ol' cheesburger. I just wanted a bite. I had a sudden need to feel like my old self again. I didn't want a little, tiny GBS size bite. I wanted to take a big hunk out of the burger. So I did. I chewed and tasted it and then spit it out in my trash can. I knew full well that I was going to spit it out when I took the bite, and I did it anyway.

My name is Traci and I'm a one-time chew-spitter.

Seriously, I have only done this once and I don't promote it at all... I felt foolish for doing it and decided it was totally silly, but I did want to be honest with all of you. I wouldn't run to McDonald's and chew & spit an entire extra value meal, but I did want to throw my two cents in here. I can definitely see where someone might consider doing it for a bite.

No hate mail, please!

I have also taken a bite and realized it wasn't what my body would accept, and I spit it out immediately. My body was glad and thanked me. I can tell within 2 chews if Napoleon will be accepting of my offering. I don't do it on a regular basis, but if I take a bite and Napoleon says no, out it goes. I'm tired of feeling crappy when I eat.

I have done these also, but never set out intentionally knowing I do not intend to eat something. I especially do it if something doesn't chew up the way I need it to, or as you said......oooops, that last swallow was actually THE last bite. I've learned my lesson about which bite is the last!! So to me, these are more about following your pouch and sensations........a good thing. It sounds to me like these ladies are playing Russian Roullette with an eating disorder. I would think you'd get lots of fat and calories rolling down and in anyhow, then without it filling your pouch......sounds like a bad recipe to me. If I had to have it that badly I'd order a salad and fill most of my pouch, then eat a few bites of what I was craving and go on with my life.

Dear Traci,

I hate your........no, just kidding......no hate mail. I'm thinking it sounds more like they are including this in their lifestyle. I eat too many carbs, but not each and every day or meal. Once in a great while I take a few sips after eating, probably not even once a week. It's the habit that'll get you. I'm just afriad someone who did this much would still gain weight and might develop really bad and unhealthy habits from it.

I think it's about intention........although, Joey usually waits til about the 4th bite to tell me it ain't happeneing.......which is generally too late! He sounds much better behaved than Napolean though........he's probably scared of me.........I'm kinda short and demanding myself.

Tawanda, chewing and spitting is no bueno.... its just learning to develop bad eating habits. If ya wanta cheesesburger eat 1/2 of one (if even that) and then make sure you burn enough calories thru exercise to fend off unwanted calories..... I dont know why people like extremes... do it or dont, but anything else is crazy

I'm with Brifget on this one. Things like that are eating disorders waiting to happen if you ask me. I can't do french fries they make me sick, but I do eat an OCCASIONAL 1/2 of a burger, if that is what I'm in the mood for or feel like I need some extra calories. The thing is people do what they want to do and you can't make them do otherwise. I live and let live! I have on many occasions spit out something that I could just tell when it got in my mouth was gonna make me sick or was just one bite too much. That is just avoiding a bad outcome, not playing with fire. Again, just my opinion!
