Default lap or gbs?

Hello,
I am trying to make a decision on whether to do Lap Band or GBS. The concern comes that maybe I am a better candidate for the LapBand. I am on the border between obese and morbidly obese. I have diabetes - my family is plagued with it. One sister had the GBS last spring and is doing well. But whe was very well in the m. obese category. She also was on 4-5 insulin shots per day.

Another sister has morbid obesity and is absolutely huge gut. She is also on 4-5 shots per day. She has many complications already at the age of 36. She came down with diabetes in her mid 20's. Our grandmother had probably a 50 inch waist. Her daughter, our natural mother, struggled with the weight problems her whole life and ended up with a quad heart bypass at the age of 56 - again - related to diabetes.

I came down with diabetes in my early 30's. Now, mind you, I have been an avid exerciser since I was 14. Aerobics, running, long walks, weight lifting, etc.... It is a HUGE struggle and when I was thinner I had to STARVE to stay thin. My doctor said we have thrifty genes.

I am about 179-180 but have been up to about 190. BUT, I am only 5'1/2" tall. But, I can't seem to go below this weight for long without doing a fast or liquid diet and we know how long those last.

So, I am trying to decide which surgery to do - the Banding or the bypass. Are there others of you out there who have had this dilemma?

I am confused as to which surgery to pursue. But, I am definately at the point where this is the best long term solution.

Well, I would recommend you go to educational seminars on both procedures and discuss your situation with your PCP and see what he recommends for you. Then I would research, research, and then research some more on both procedures. Then you will know what each one has to offer and what you area better candidate for. Good luck!

Not all insurance companies cover the banding. You should first check to make sure that yours covers it. If not then you have an easy answer.
