Tell me the REAL story...
I have finally been approved for my surgery - YAH!!! Surgery will be sometime in mid-December, methinks.
My husband and daughters want to know what type of support I will need at home the first two weeks post-op. Will I need someone home with me all the time? I can imagine I will be sore - just how much help did people need getting up and out of a chair, for example? Did you need help walking around the house? Could you go for walks outside? Is it a good idea to plan on using the recliner or is that too uncomfortable getting out of?
I think I have the dietary guidelines down pat but this other stuff concerns me particularly because my family will have to take days off from work if it sounds from your feedback that I will be needing help.
Any info you can give me would be so greatly appreciated!

Are you having open or lap? I just had mine lap on Monday and the only help I have needed is with my 4 young children (3 are 5 and under) Other than that I haven't needed any help getting up or around. I also haven't needed any pain meds in days and I was only taking childrens Tylenol.
Everyones experience is different so I would plan on help but if you find you don't need it send them on their way.
Good luck to you!

I had lap and open RNY on Oct. 4th, came home on Friday. My husband went back to work on Monday. I didn't have any problems being home by myself. I didn't need help getting around. I know everyone is different though. Some feel better than others after the surgery. Good Luck!!

Thanks!
I feel better hearing about your experiences. We are planning for lap surgery but because I had a rather large abdominal hernia repair, it may have to be open. I'm such a chicken about pain!!!

On the down side... i don't know what I would have done if my husband had not been home with me. It wasn't the surgery but the drain was on a nerve everytime I tried to stand up it was very hard. once i made it up I was usually ok but still needed help going to the bathroom ect.... good news is that drain comes out . the minute it was out I was 100% better. i had lap.

I had open and was okay to get up and down on my on for the most part. getting out of bed was another story. I definately needed help the first couple days but after that I was okay. Got out of the hospital on Friday and hubby went back to work on Monday, kids went back to school. He works nights so he was home all day and I had the kids in the evening to help out.

I too had drain issues, so I needed a little bit of help the first week getting up and down. But I LIVED and LOVED my recliner! I couldn't do the bed the first few weeks because of pain, but my recliner was perfect, I don't know what I would have done without it.

I had lap and the only thing I can think of that I needed help with (besides anything involving lifting) was getting the band back on around my tummy. Actually, we laps were told that after we left the hospital those were optional, but I felt like my guts were moving around without it. I wore it for a week or so. Actually, as far as getting food, meds, etc......we are supposed to be getting up and walking. My friend who had open came and stayed with me. She needed a little help at first with a recliner. She was most comfy in it, but had a little trouble getting out of it. She said she felt some of her pain was the incision and the fact that she had a lot of belly weight/hang pulling on it as she moved around. But she was ok doing most things too. Hope this helps.

I stayed with my mom for a week after discharge. She was a big help with the kids and taking me to the store and stuff, but I couldn't have done it had I had to go home alone.
