Addicted To Cokes and Sweets
Hello everyone.
I'm new here so bear with me.
I'm wanting the gastric bypass but fear I will fail . I've been addicted to cokes and surgar most all my life and feel after the surgery I will fail. It's hard for me thinking this will be a life long change and don't know if I can succeed.
Will I still be craving these things and how will I control my cravings? I'm sure others have had this same problems and would greatly appreciate some feedback to ease my mind. I know if I don't have this surgery done I will have a short life.

Sharon~
I don't know where you are in the process of getting the surgery done or just curious at this point.YOUR LIFE has to change. The surgery is just a tool..not used properly and you will fail it.
If your just begining..I would strongly recomend some sort of couseling...food addition...Most on here...a few do not ...but most here have some sort of low self esteam.I know I did...I just covered it up by being the funny one always happy on the outside...when really dying inside.
Even seeing your Name on here.."Fat Sharon 3x" shows your pain. You can succeed and will succeed but YOU control your tool.
I wish you the best in your journey~
My only advice is to start seeing someone now ..a Therapist...A support group...something.
Take Care Sharon and welcome to this forum~
Vanessa

I am also new here and am in my pre-op testing phases. I have heard (and others can confirm/deny this) that many of your cravings will change or cease to exist after surgery. Also, if you were to drink Coke or have sweets, you can experience the "dumping syndrome" which just makes you feel crappy and can result in vomiting. Once you experience that from a Coke, my bet is that you probably won't want one anymore.
Do your research - you'll know in your heart whether or not this surgery is for you. Also, use this forum and ask questions. This is a great group of people who can relate and will encourage you.
All the best!

Welcome Sharon! I think following Vanessa's advice would be best. Get some counseling during your pre op phase and see if you can work through these issues. My tastes have changed a lot since wls and I'm not big on sweets anymore. When I do crave something it is usually fruit sometimes I have s/f candy or pudding but not very often anymore. I drank at least a 12 pack of Diet Coke a day and haven't had one since wls. I'm glad I'm off of it! I don't even crave it anymore to be honest! You have to be willing to change and you can do anything you want to do if you set your mind to it!

Fear of Failure
Sharon,
I think that the fear of failing is a pretty common feeling among preop-and postop-gastric bypass patients. We know that this is pretty much the end of the road as far as weight loss programs go. I am over two years out and I have lost 100% of my excess weight. However, I still have this fear that I can gain the weight back. In fact, two years out is where many patients begin to gain weight back, so I am trying to be extra careful. Sharon, if you start now trying to wean yourself off sugar, when you have your surgery you will find it easier to stay off of the stuff. Do it slowly...don't try to quit cold turkey. Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

Welcome to the family Sharon. Like you I am still addicted to sweets but being on the other side I am learning day by day on how to kill this addiction. Even after surgery it still takes work, now you could be of those loser would will dump on a couple of grams of sugar and will no longer want or stand the site of sweets but always know walking into surgery it will not fix that desire to have those sweets. Sharon it is rough but if you maintain the focuse needed you will see it through. Best of wishes to you.

I am in the same boat as you. Up until the day I got my surgery date (Thursday night) I have always drank a ton of pop. I decided that I have 2 weeks to quit due to the 2 week clear liquid diet, so I have started weening myself off.
I decided to have this surgery for a reason, and I am going to give it my full 100%. To have it and not give it my full try would be a waste. I want to be successful. That is a choice I have made.

Well, I've never been a great sweet lover -- but I always loved coke (the real stuff too; not diet); and I admit there are times I've wanted a coke since my bypass, but there are so many other issues I'm dealing with -- that I haven't had time to worry about coke. Also, your protein drink will take care of your sweet cravings, PLUS: EVERYTHING tastes 5x as sweet since the surgery.
Based on experience I can say that your cravings are pretty much man-handled by the surgery. I loved chips before the surgery but they don't taste as good to me now and I get sick if I eat my formerly beloved French fries. Still, there will come a time when I can eat more and when I will probably be able to tolerate fries; so, it is important that I learn my lessons now, important that I learn new ways of eating now. The surgery really is a tool that makes it easy to avoid problem foods for the first 6 mths to a year ; but after that it depends on us and hopefully we have learned new habits during that early period.
