Welcome to the board Sharon. Everyone is so right in what they have said so far. Nearly everyone I talk to about my surgery says and/or feels the same way that you stated, I think. How can you give all that up?

It's not as hard as you might think. You start off by just taking liquids, then you go to soft foods .. and work your way back to normal. During the course of those 3 months, your mindset changes. You look at the way everyone else eats and you can't even imagine that is something you will ever do again. It's kinda weird really. But you really do change and its not like you will wake up from the surgery thinking this way. Ill betcha nearly everyone has the mindset change over that first three months.

One of my (many) vices too was dr. pepper. Whenever I hear that ssssssssstttttttt sound of someone opening a can of soda I get a twinge of 'mmmm' but it truly is momentary. All of the good things that come from losing weight so outweigh those twinges. I know others have been able to incorporate soda and sweets into their lifestyles at a certain point in the journey, and that is comforting too. Learning to eat just one of anything! Just for a taste of it. I guess that is the goal of anyone who is trying to lose or keep their weight off.

anyhoo... Good Luck to you in your research and journey into WLS.

Smile

Welcome,
I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in... I am post-op of banding and pre-op to the bypass. My experiences have been very similiar to everyones here and I know that I can do this but I am also gonna be grateful for the dumping syndrom...I know I am crazy...but I know that I will try something at least once and I need to work on my discipline..I attend counseling on a regular basis, my food addiction is from being an emotional eater.....happy=eat..sad=eat...mad=eat...breathing =eat..lol. I would love to eat a french fry...but I can't and I am okay with that because my mind needs to learn that I am in control not food!!!! I take it one day at a time and I WILL WIN....SO WILL YOU!!! You have to believe in yourself...I believe in you..after all you have taken the 1st step, you have admitted that you have a problem and you are here with us....
Much Love and Support to You...

Default Have no fear...

The first week after surgery, every food commercial made me crazy wanting it. But it's weird (and a blessing), when I actually got to the point where I could eat things again, the things that I used to be crazy about eating (and overeating) just didn't seem that appealing. And it's not about not being able to eat. As long as I chew my food, everything agrees with me, no dumping, no nothing.

Example: I LOVED fast food. Pizza, Taco Bell, Carls Jr., SUPER SIZE ME, BABY! It still tastes good, but after a couple of bites, I just don't feel like eating any more. So I buy a regular burger, (rather than a giant one or a double), eat half, save half for later.

It's not restraint, discomfort, or discipline. If I want it, I can eat it, it just doesn't seem to be anything I want anymore. Everyone's different of course, but for me the mental adjustment has been remarkabley easy, and the quick weight loss results are great.

You'll make the right decision when you're ready.

Mark

I helped my son make a peanut butter sandwich yesterday and found myself craving the same. I'm not far enough out that I can eat bread yet, but man was it tempting. I had an addiction to diet coke and stopped 2 days prior to surgery. I just simply haven't wanted a soda since then. I'd rather have Crystal Light, which I hated before surgery. Things do have a way of changing.

I'm wanting the gastric bypass but fear I will fail . I've been addicted to cokes and surgar most all my life and feel after the surgery I will fail. It's hard for me thinking this will be a life long change and don't know if I can succeed.
Will I still be craving these things and how will I control my cravings? I'm sure others have had this same problems and would greatly appreciate some feedback to ease my mind. I know if I don't have this surgery done I will have a short life.

Nothing tastes as good as thin feels. How bad do you really want it? Will you go threw all that pain and recovery and still cheat yourself? How much is it worth to you? Ask yourself those questions......

Most people dump when they eat stuff like that. I am not one of them. But I can have a nibble of something and not want more because I do not want to cheat myself. This means to much to me, and I know if you have WLS you will feel the same.
