Don't be afraid to tell your employer. I work for a large vitamin company (SWANSON HEALTH PRODUCTS) and they are very supportive. Even after all the complications I have had. Have you ever heard of the FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE ACT? I am sure your employer has. It allows at least 10-12 weeks of medical leave from you job. Your employer has to hold your job open for you. Ask your Human Resource Department about it. You will have to have your doctor fill out some paper work for you regarding your surgery. DO NOT FELL BAD about telling employer about your upcoming surgery, he/she may surprise you and be very understanding. They may also look at it as you being a very courteous employee by telling them. GOOD LUCK. FROM NAENAE

I applied for State Disability Insurance and got it for the whole 8 weeks I took off. It was about 2/3 of my regular salary. I also took out a loan from my 401k plan, money was the last thing I wanted to worry about after surgery. Its really no ones business who you tell or don't, its what your comfortable with. Some work places are more accepting than others and only you know. If I had it to do over again I would have said I needed time off for surgery and left it at that. The Hipaa law protects our privacy .

I'm not telling my boss -- or my co-workers. The only way they find out is when I tell them after I get back to work.
