Liquid Diet before Surgery
I have heard some of you talk about going on a liquid diet before surgery in order to lose some of the weight drs. require. What exactly do you drink? I've been a bad girl and have been eating everything in sight the past two weeks and now I'm waiting to hear from the insurance company and keep thinking I still have time to lose those extra 10 lbs that the dr. wants me to lose in order to do the surgery. HELP! I'm worried that if I don't lose 'em, they won't go through with the surgery.

I lost about 10-15 lbs. the 2 weeks before I went in for surgery. 7 days before surgery, I went on my clear liquid diet. The first couple of days weren't terrific..sucked really!...but once you get over the first 2 day hump, it will be easy as pie. I actually stopped going to the restroom and my body went into rest mode. I think I lost about 10 lbs. that week. I wasn't hungry at all, and actually had to MAKE myself take in the liquids, etc. WEIRD!
Anyway, here is what I had:
(All SUGAR-FREE)
chicken and beef broth
apple, cranberry, and grape juice diluted by 50% water
jello
popsicles
I think that's it...
Hope this helps...

Oops, I forgot.... My doctor made me go on this diet to shrink my organs and especially my liver for my surgery. He said he could definitely tell that I had followed my diet to the letter! It's important to do so if your doctor tells you to do it! I've heard stories about him closing someone right back up if he suspected they hadn't followed the diet.
Anyway, just some advice just in case this diet is specifically needed for your surgery.

Wow two weeks! Well done you Nikki. I only had to do two days and I was a raving lunatic at work by the second. But yer right, I wanted to do exactly what the doc told me to do, cuz I wanted things to go as smoothly as possible. Fortunately he switched me over to full liquids 3 days after the surgery.

Nikki girl! Thank you for your wisdom and answer to my thread! I am having lap surgery and he did say specifically I needed to shrink the liver. I need to do this liquid thing, even though I don't have a date, i want to be prepared. I'm just too much into the thought that "i'm having this surgery and I can eat whatever I want right now...." which I know is BAD BAD BAD !!

Don't worry, I did the same..Ate everything in sight for about a month or two prior to my surgery. I think I even gained about 15 lbs. Anyway, I figured I'd better start eating smaller meals to get myself used to the whole lifestyle change so I started doing that as the date got closer, so I think I really prepared myself well. I also had to stop smoking 2 months prior, so, YES, I was a lunatic as well! Oh my gosh! No food, no smokes, no alcohol, no caffeine or soda. Lifestyle change for sure! But things are getting easier with every day that passes and I now feel TERRIFIC! I made a terrific decision and I'm glad I didn't chicken out!

Well, I fess up..my main food staple has been nachos for the past 2 months. I've posted that info. before and feel guilty every time I say it. I KNOW it's not the greatest nutritionally, but is so dang easy to fix and satisfying because of the crunch! I have got to come up with a new menu, but everything is so time consuming to make! They need to make WLS meals in the frozen freezer section! Otherwise, I buy too much and food goes bad, or I don't buy the RIGHT things! OOOH and I LOVE enchiladas...although that pesky tortilla gets in the way now..makes me too full! And I remember the days when I could eat 2 or 3 in a sitting...glad those days are gone!

It must be the need for something crunchy, like eating a sandwich, you gotta have some Lays!

I drank lots of WATER, sf tang, sf koolaid, crystal light... and my doc here in Oklahoma allowed us to have our protein shakes as well, which really was a life saver since I would have died of hunger the two days prior to surgery.
