My moment of truth was finding out my mother was diagnosed with a disintegrating hip joint at 54.

I already have Type II Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, severe achilles tendonitis, acid reflux and bone spurs in my neck. I looked up in a health journal what the best prevention of hip problems.....lose weight. That never works for me...

So, instead of getting old and rickety and bed-ridden before my time, I decided to look into getting WLS. Which is scarier? Dying young or having major surgery? I decided dying young is scarier. Plus, I had quite a few successful WLS examples around me, so it makes sense to me.

Hope your decision making goes smoothly!

Part of mine was similar to Annelle. A few years back I started meeting people here and there who had been successful with the surgery. I guess that planted the idea in my mind. I have found that people who have had WLS are very open to questions, even personal ones, when they know you are trying to make a choice about your own health and life rather than just being nosey. Being here is your best bet to figure out your own answer. I have not found people to be pushy about this being for everyone, but rather, a group to help look at the positives and negatives both.

well for me i was sick of the person in the mirror looking back at me that was a failure because the diets would only work temporarily then I would feel like a failure again

Default Why I did it

I went back and forth myself, and even tried another last ditch diet for about 3 months in between the process of getting approved. The reasons for me doing this is that I am just like my grandmother was at this age, MO and aquiring health problems like loose change. I knew based on her life (she died at 63) that I would probably die at that age or sooner with the problems I had. So for me that meant another maybe 20 yrs of living and what hell it would have been to live like that not being able to move around etc. I also couldn't see myself in a wheelchair to move. So now that I'm down almost 50 lbs since surgery I feel so much better and if I don't lose any more weight I could live with this. Good luck with your process. Suzy
