Default Surgery June 21st, Just came down with cold

Hello everyone! This is my first time posting, I have been reading the forum daily for almost 2 weeks now, I have gained a wealth of knowledge from everyone's experiences. Thanks!
I now have my own question. I am scheduled for a lap RNY on June 21st, and about 2 days ago my throat started to get swollen and my sinuses are stuffy now.
I have a doc appt later today, but do you think that this cold could affect my surgery? I hope it goes away, but if it develops into a cough, I know the surgeon will make me reschedule. I wish there was something I could do to make it to where this doesn't turn into a cough!!
By the way, I am having surgery in Phoenix with Dr. Villares @ St. Lukes Medical Center. I have done all my pre-op testing, just have my pre-op appt. to go next Friday, then surgery next Tuesday. I found out yesterday that I am going to have to go on a full liquid diet starting a week before scheduled surgery. I wasn't expecting that, just went to the grocery store day before yesterday! Now I need to go back to get full liquid items!

In maintenance... now I'm yo-yoing up and down 10 lbs or so. I'm trying to find out how to stay at a set weight, it's rough.

Sorry to hear about you being sick. I would definitely ask your doctor if he could put you on some strong meds so that it goes away in time. Good luck on everything

Tiffany,
See if your doctor will let you take "Airborne". It's a herbal suppliment -lots of vit C- that really works great for me. They told me to stop taking asprin and any herbal 10 days before surgery, but I usually only use it a day or two and it helps. If your surgery is the 21st you have a couple days to try it.

Hi Tiffany

I'm not sure about your surgeon but mine has already warned me. Should I come down with a cold or flu my surgery will be rescheduled.

Now we all know that no amout of antibiotics can cure a cold if it's viral. What you can do is boost your immune system to help get over it quicker.

Echinacea....Head down to your local vitamin store and get yourself a bottle....Some extra vit C and zinc won't hurt either.

If I were in your shoes I'd wait until the last possible moment before telling your surgeon you're down with a cold. But that's me....I'd want to give myself every possible chance to get over it and have my surgery as scheduled.

Eitherway I hope things work out for you and you start feeling better soon.

Default sickly

I got sick only a couple of weeks prior to my surgery as well. I was praying that I would be better in time... and I was, but I definitely should have gone to the doc to see if he could put me on something to clear it up faster. When they put those tubes down your throat for surgery, all that drainage and goop gets really gross afterwards. If, by chance, your surgery is postponed, don't be too disappointed. Better safe than sorry! I wish you luck on your big day!

Default Thanks!

Thank you so much for the replies, everyone! I did go to the doctor yesterday and she put me on Entex to dry me up, she said that it shouldn't turn into a cough if I am on that medication, and she told me to drink fluids all day long and rest. She thinks that it is just viral and that it will be gone if I follow her directions before surgery. Of course following her directions to rest when I have a million things to do before surgery is going to be hard, but I will do it!
