Default Where I'm @

Hello all. I'm new here, so I thought I'd just give a quick run-down on my situation.

I decided to pursue WLS last year. After a few initial consults with the local bariatric wellness institute, I was being readied for pre-surgery testing. Shortly after that, my insurance company stopped approving any WLS procedures and that put me on hold.

Two months later, they announced new guidelines for WLS patients. One of the new requirements was a 6 month "diet" program to be done with a dietitian in conjunction with your family doctor.

Tomorrow is my last appointment -- i.e. the end of the 6 months -- for me. I don't know what to expect, but I know I'm ready to get the ball rolling.

I reached my max. weight in Feb. @ 400lbs. and was told I'd need to be ~369lbs. to be considered for lap Roux-en-Y. So I've been working towards that goal over the past few months.

I hope that things hurry along, as June will be the first month that many will be getting scheduled for surgery. I work for the public school system here and I would love to be able to get my surgery done over the summer break.

Anyway, that's a little bit of where I'm at. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of this community.

Thanks, Kim!

I weighed in on Friday and I am still @ 381lbs. - no loss for a month, but I've got to lose ~15lbs. before my pre-surgery consult.

And there's the whole thing about waiting for BC/BS of Alabama to approve me.

I had an Open RNY, The doc told me this was the way to go as my Ribcage and Liver were HUGE did you look into this method as well? If you have any questions just e-mail me. Good luck.......John

I'm kind-of scared of the open procedure as opposed the lap. method. I've got to be able to get back to work fairly soon, so this would be best -- but if I can't, I can't...my health is much more important right now.

My initial visit with the doc went well and he thought the lap would work for me...

I've got another appointment with him before I get to schedule my surgery.

Thanks, John -- I may be in touch.

As far as the open RNY goes, I was back at work in 17 days, as soon as the staples were out. I was worried that it would take forever to recover. Honestly the incision NEVER hurt. It was the Gas pain form air getting trapped in my thoratic cavity when I was opened up. The scar has faded pretty good, and I figure the redness will be gone in another month or two. My doc tells me, your recovery is directly related to the state of health you are in when you have the surgery. If you have MAJOR problems like diabetes, heart failure, high blood pressure, etc etc. Chances are, that it will take a bit longer to recover. luckly I had the surgery, right before the MAJOR problems were in full-swing. Talk to your doctor. They may know a little bit more than me.......haha. Good luck John
