Other Weight Lost Measures?
I'm curious to know what was the most weight others have lost while under other weight lost measures before deciding to have WLS, such as diet and/or exercise, liposuction, etc.
Myself, I went on the Atkins diet 2 yrs ago this July. I combined the low-carb diet with the hiring of a personal trainer and daily 1-2 hours of exercise at the gym. I went from 341 lbs to 245 lbs in 5 months. I averaged approx. 20 lbs/mo. It was a lifestyle change that when I slipped, it totally changed in the other direction. I gained all my weight back with an additional 15-20 lbs in about the same time it took me to lose it. I felt like all that work went down the drain. But I'm finding out the same with WLS, from my research and talking with different people, I've found that the weight can come back on just as fast as you've lost it, and then some. So I guess it's true to say that any measure of weight lost has to be maintained with diet and exercise or some sort of lifestyle change. Correct?
What's the most that you've lost and how did you do it?

Hi Yolanda;
I've not tried weight watchers, atkins, or any type of diet like that. Mainly because of the exact thing you experienced - and it's the same with any diet, once you come off it, the weight comes back, sometimes with a vengance!
In high school I did lose 100 lbs. but that was agressive so I could enter the Air Force. Through the years, I've been able to lose between 40 to 60 lbs. but it always came back. About 5 years ago, I tried once again. I changed my eating habits, and went to a health club 3 to 4 times a week. I did manage to lose 60 lbs. in 6 months. When I changed my routine and cut back on the health club - the weight came back less than a year later.
The people who've had the surgery will give you the straight talk. They are honest, straight forward and will tell you like it is. In all, these are the most wonderful people you will ever meet.
WLS is a like a "final solution" for people who've tried and not been successful with anything else. (I don't believe in the word "failure").
I've not had the surgery - yet. I do however, expect to have it done before the fall.

I was in a 12 step program for food addiction (CEA) and lost 100 -- 70 --- 50 pounds on 3 separate occasions. Only thing..... couldn't keep it off, the program was too structured for me (required 3 meetings a week, 3 calls a day, daily sponsor contact w/writing assignments, a slip meant starting over and/or losing your sponsor). This is much better because I am doing it for me not out of fear. However, I do not regret one minute in the program - It taught me how to live.

Okay, without writing a book, here is my weight loss history.
8 years old - Mom takes me to doctor to get pills to loose weight. I don't remember if I lost any weight or not, too long ago.
14 years old - Mom takes me to doctor to get pills to loose weight. I loose 70 pounds in 6 months.
17 - 30 years old smoke cigarettes as part of a weight control program, drugs, every diet that came along.
31 - 41 stop drugs, stop smoking, have kids, try Fen Phen, loose 70 pounds. Gain a bunch of weight, loose a bunch of weight, WW, Atkins, exercise, loose weight, exercise, gain weight, loose weight, exercise, gain weight, repeat.
45 years old Jenny Craig, spent a small fortune on food lost 20 pounds, gained 60.
46 - Weight loss surgery. So far as of this morning lost 100 pounds! I've got 6 pounds to go until I hit goal. To say I was skeptical, is a gross understatement.
WLS is the best thing I've ever done for myself. I am a changed person, I'm healthy, I'm happy, I am a participant in life!
I wish you all much success in your journey! Believe me, if I can do it, so can you.

My God! That sounds like my mom. My grandmother was always on her about losing weight. She was on a diet of one type or another all her life. It was a nightmare at times. She had so many health problems, and I'm sure a lot of it was the losing/gaining bit. At one point, in the late 60's she had so many medications for so many different things I never knew what I was walking into when I came home from school! She had terrible mood swings, and a temper like you wouldn't believe. Yes, she had an addiction, and she finally kicked it. But never really did overcome her weight problem.
My grandmother didn't believe anyone should be "fat". She started in on mom about me. Mom did stand up for me and told her very bluntly never to say anything to me about my size, and she never did.

Wow, it was my Grandma that started it with my Mom too! I love my Grandma, she's still alive and kickin' at 96, but she was always on me about my weight and to sit and stand up straight. Too funny the similarities we share.

Thank you my dear sweet friend! I really never thought I would make it! I owe my success to all of you that have so unselfishly (is that a word?) given your advice, suggestions, shared with your heart, provided your wonderful friendship and helped me, more than you all will ever know. I can not imagine what it would have been like not to have you all right there beside me, I thank God I don't have to find out.

Optifast
I went on opti at Kaiser. The first time I lost 80 lbs in 5 mos.
Gained it back in two years. The second time I lost 70 lbs in 5 mos. Gained it back in one year Plus 30 more. I was fine on the fasting but just couldn't get the food!
This tool should be the trick, I can lose, but with this tool I will be able to keep it off.

Kim - I'm curious, our parents grew up during the depression - did they raise you to eat everything on your plate? Eat everything or you get no dessert?
I still can't go near beef liver without gagging. Head cheese - don't go there! (We visited grandma when she was making some, was boiling the head outside). Oh geez, I just remembered mom was raised on buttermilk as well. I look at it as concentrated choloresterol! (yep, she grew up in the country).
Mom came from a big family. My grandfather was a big man, so is one of my uncles. She learned to cook large meals, and carried over when my brother and I were growing up. My brother is in good shape with his weight, however, I won the "fat gene."
My parents are gone now, same with my grandparents. Mom died of heart failure. Besides the smoking, and emphazema, I'm sure the stress of gaining/losing had a significant impact as well.
I'm so proud for you - hitting the centruy mark!
