I have to comment on the Mom bashing. I'm not blaming my Mom, good Lord, I'm 47, years old, I make the choice of what I put into my mouth and I have since I was 18 years old.
Isn't it great that we can identify a behavior that is not healthy and do whatever we can to change that cycle of behavior for our kids? I think so! As a Mom, I sure hope so!
Rhonda, I've changed my whole families eating style and habbits. My kids have become lable readers, I'm so proud of them. My daughter, God Bless her, is just like me. I'm still learning myself. I promise to share if you'll do the same! okay?

[QUOTE=watergirl]I have to comment on the Mom bashing. I'm not blaming my Mom,
I agree! No mom bashing, just tender emotions in tender people. We shoved the food in our face, and we didn't exercise. Somehow, Mom's just became the "ouch" in our minds. They weren't really to blame....
The one thing I'll really try and do for my kids is tell them they're beautiful/attractive/cute all the time. Have them eat as well as possible, and let them know I love them no matter what. My mom definately did that for me!!!!

Yeah I'm sure I will chicken out with that whole thing. Who knows when I get liquid courage I do and say things I would never do without it. Just ask the guys at Stamepede when I told them we don't ride bulls we ride cowboys. I thought Sindi was going to die.

Since my surgery, we only have healthy snacks in the house, my cooking is sooo much different than it was before surgery and my 4 year old is still heavy. She now weighs 75 pounds. She goes on every walk with me, she rides her bike, and plays like any other 4 year old.
Any advise on how to combat childhood obesity would be greatful.

I would talk to the pediatrician, and possibly a nutritionist. We need to break the cycle that's infecting our kids. I'm planning on starting the gym again once I'm done with my masters program (7 weeks to go ). He always liked going with me, but if I don't go, he has no way of getting there himself. However - he IS taking his driving test next week, and already has his own car (I know, we grew up walking to school in the snow, barefoot ... and uphill!)
One thing that scared the bejeebers out of him was the documentary "Super Size Me." It was absolutely shocking! He won't go near a McDonalds (or any fastfood) now. (I know you 4 year old is way to young to understand the movie.) I'd also search on amazon.com and look for nutrition books her age.
Of course, kids emulate their parents, and I'm the first to admin, I've not been the best role model. The main thing is he knows and understands, and wants to do something about it (thank God!)
I hope this helps

My mom is from Vietnam. Dad is Anglo-Saxon. Mom is a naturally tiny thing (with real high cholesterol) and my dad has grown to be quite heavy. Though, for many years I was bigger than him! My mom always said, "You so big, here, eat more eggrolls". At all the Asian gatherings, the cute little under 5 ft women would come up and pinch me all over and comment, "You so big!" and of course offer me more eggrolls and Pho. And that's when I was 110 lbs! What's up with the mixed messages

Growing up, my best friend Ynhi was Vietnemese (she's still like a sister). I understand where you're coming from Marie!
I was like this gigantore around her family. I'm 5'9 - 300lbs to their 5ft nothin' in barefeet and 5'3 in heels (her mom mostly). They loved me, but I was like a freak around them.....twice their size...
Luckily, Yn and I both grew up relatively well-balanced despite our parents influence....

I like to think they're the asian equivalent to Jewish mothers!
The same thing's happened to me when we go to a party or something on my wife's side (philippine). Always a ton of food, and if you don't eat, they think somethings wrong - that you don't like the food. When I was in the Philippines for the first time, my wife-to-be and I went and visited the homes of all her relatives one day. At each house it was "welcome - eat". If I didn't, they would be disappointed, so I ate, and ate, and ate. I can't tell you how full I felt at the end of the day!
I gotta admit, I love philippine food.
(P.S. My wife has no weight problem, 5'4" 125 lbs)

Let's see, I was a fat kid. We always had to eat everything on our plates. I don't remember alot of junk food as a kid, except ice cream and potato chips. My mom felt sorry for me and would compensate by buying me lots of clothes, shoes, anything I wanted. Needless to say, I was a tad spoiled. Then, before we knew any better, she would buy me Dexatrim (when I was a teenager). I lost about 60 lbs. or so and started to look decent. I got down to a size 13. Then, I got married, had kids, and found out I had a thyroid problem. Through the years, I tried Weight Watchers 3 times, Shaklee, Cambridge, starvation, nutritionist, Phen/Fen, Redux, gyms, hypnosis, Slim Fast, Atkins, etc. I may have lost a few pounds here and there, but before I knew it, I ballooned up to 325 lbs. A dear friend of mine had gastric bypass and I watched with envy as she lost weight. I was going to do it 2 years ago, but chickened out 3 days before surgery. Then I decided to try it on my own one last time. Of course it didn't work. So, last year I decided to go through with it. Next Thursday will be one year for me and I've lost 150 lbs. The only regret that I have is that I didn't do it sooner.

Tabitha;
That is so COOL! Congrats! Don't regret not doing it before - you've done it now and that's what counts.
Reading your post, I remember trying Dexitrim - I didn't lose any weight, but it made me so bloody hyper with all that caffine in it! I couldn't take it! My heart rate was so fast, it took three days to finally come down off the walls. It had me scared.

I never really had a weight problem as a child. As a matter of fact, I was just totally the opposite and kids used to pick at me for being too skinny. I loved my vegetables and hated the meats. I use to sneak the meats under the dinner table to my HUSKY sized brother who was the one who had the childhood weight problem and still does. Who ever guessed that my weight would catch up and pass his, who's stands approx. 6'0" and weighs about 300-315 currently.
Wow....what a difference 3.5 decades make.
