Worried....
I have been on the pre-op diet Since last Sunday so today will be my eighth day without food and the weight just isn't coming off anymore. I am down 9 pounds but that came off the first few days and now my body has hit a stall...what if I have the surgery and my body just doesn't want to lose it?
I haven't cheated, not even one time but it just seems like I should be losing more. For my liquid diet I have four meal supplement drinks a day and 2 cups TOTAL of fruits and/or veggies that are on my list. I am probably getting maybe 600 calories in a day! In the past when I have reduced it by this much I usually just continue to lose but then I get to this stall point, which is still overweight and it goes no where despite exercise and diet change. So I am worried that my body will do the same after the surgery...if that's the case then why have the surgery? Am I still going to linger at a weight considered obese and unhealthy? Getting down to 200 is not a problem for me but I always feel so unhealthy at that weight and I had hoped that the surgery would get me below that mark since I'm starting at only 242....anyone have some thoughts on this?

Believe me, we all have that fear....that we'll be the ONE that the surgery DOESN'T work for! However, I have to say, the surgery does work, and it works for everyone! There are people who re-gain their weight, but for the most part, the way the surgery is done today, there is very little stretching of the pouch...so you really can lose the weight and keep it off. You do have to watch it, but it's pretty easy to maintain after that first year "honeymoon" phase is over. There are stalls along the way, but believe me, as little as you are able to eat after surgery, the weight will come off!!! Even now, I can eat anything...and everything..pretty much....and still stay at 155. If I actually followed a low carb diet, exercised, and didn't drink Starbucks, I think I could drop another 20 or 30 pounds easily!! So, please don't worry about this. Your body may be holding onto fat now because you've cut your calories down so much...but it'll perk up again! As long as you are eating right, your body has no choice but to lose the weight. Once you have the surgery, you really can't overeat...it's physically impossible. Your pouch will protest if you put too much in there! Hang in there, and please put this issue to rest, you have plenty of other things to worry about, let this one go!!!

I did two full weeks of the pre-op diet (water, protein shakes & bars - per my doctor's office)... I was 100% faithful to the program, and only lost 10 pounds. I was shocked! Even worse - I weighed in the day after surgery and had GAINED 8! Talk about a freak-out!
But - my liver was "Stellar" (per the surgeon)... and one week following surgery, I was 15.6 down from where I was when I started the pre-op diet...
Hang in there and KEEP THE FAITH!

So you lost 9 pounds in a week? That's a lot of weight in one week! From what I'm reading from post-opers, they're losing an average of 20 a month. When you think about it, that's really awesome. For example: I weigh 240 now. I have my surgery in September. By December, I should be down at least 60 pounds, and if I keep going at that rate (which I highly doubt because it's gotta slow down), I'll be down another 60 by March or if I'm really lucky, by next June. That's 120 pounds in less than a year. I'm thinking I'll probably stop at 90 or 100, but that's ok too. I can live with that!
One thing I learned from all my years as a steady Weight Watchers member is that your body goes into starvation mode if it's not getting enough food in it. At that point, your weight loss stops or slows down. In WW, they urge you to eat all your points to keep your metabolism up. Exercise helps too. And as we all know, if we tried losing on WW, it would take us a lot longer to lose 120 pounds. It took me over a year to lose 45 on WW and I was thrilled.
Personally, I wouldn't be discouraged with a 9 pound loss in one week. You'll be fine. You will have peaks and valleys, gains and losses. But if you do go ahead with this surgery, I'll bet you'll be really pleased with yourself by this time next year.

Pre-Op Weight Loss
Hi, my name is Jon
When I was first placed on the liquid diet (and they told me to keep it at all liquids) I lost 15lbs. in the first week. I was thrilled and began to calculate how much I could lose at that rate before I had surgery. I did not cheat, and the next week I actually gained 2lbs. I was devistated , but I stayed with it and I have lost another 10lbs. over the last couple of weeks. It seems like no matter how much you cut back, and especially if you cut back a lot, you lose a lot at first, then you stop (or go backwards) for a little bit before you start losing again. Keep the faith, and good luck!

Thanks everyone...I guess its easy to get discouraged at this point because I am so dang hungry LOL and so close to the surgery. sometimes the look and the smell of food still gets to me but I am getting through it and I know deep down that the surgery is the only way to have true success...guess I'm just getting nervous and questioning everything I've come this far...no turning back!

Don't worry, I lost 3 lbs the first day of my pre op diet and was down 9 total lbs by the second day. Then the scales didn't move for about 5 more days! I finally started losing again and am down a total of 18 lbs, but now the scales have stopped again. I think it just has to do with your body adjusting.
